Rasko Da Gama

Jeucken... You can make these on your own. Take yours out, scan them with scanner, play with Photoshop or CorrelDraw, print them on some quality photo paper, get them plastificied and install them. I'll do this on mine pretty soon - when I have more time https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

These are not myne. These are from some JDM VR-4, as you can see the RPM gouge is on the other side and the km/h is just till 180km/h... This is standard in JDM vehicles... But I'll made similar for my car, just till 8k RPM ofcourse... Damn you SOHC engines

[FIN]Teme
10-17-2003, 09:42 AM
that's odd.. 195? manual says topspeed 188km/h... and i cant get meter to rise over 190km/h...

your engine must be in top shape https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

jeucken
10-17-2003, 01:34 PM
Don't know what the manual say's about mine (too lazy to go downstairs and check it out). But when I'm alone in the car and I push the pedal all the way down for about five minutes it's at about 190 to 195 and it doesn't go any faster from there.

Rasko Da Gama
10-17-2003, 01:36 PM
You have too push the engine to let it "open" https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif
Mine goes 210km/h with 185/70/14 winter tires on 14" wheels https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif
With summer tires 205/50/16 - hardly 200km/h, but it is a fact that I am taking good care of my engine

BTW: Today I took off my old Gauges - wanted to scan them, but a friend who has a scanner wasn't home, so I'll scan them tomorow.Than I'll go and play with Photoshop. But I saw a big problem. Our Galant gauges have lights from behind, so I steel don't know how to make those numbers to be visible in the night. I guess I'll just try a few different models and than let you know the result.
I hope it'll turn out nice.

Hey, dont forget that because you are scanning copyrighted material. probably the only way to get around that one is to make your end product an Open Source project. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif (big hint there)

Have you guys also noticed something about the Glo Guages that are around? The Temp indicator is on the Speed Dial,, but on mine the Temp is on the Taco.

Maybe thats a Left/Right Hand drive variation that causes that.( i am right)

So thats another reason why I cant use them. I dont mind the miles becuase i already know the conversions, ( most of my cars had miles only and its easy to convert without even thinking) - in fact its kind of retro to have a miles only car.

OK, first of all I'll share my work with you fellas https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif
Here are my original Gauges scaned... I'll show you my final product when I'm finished...

So if anyone likes to play with Photoshop or Corel Draw, here is a .jpg image of my Original Face Gauges. If you don't know how to use those programs, you'll have to wait few more days until I'm satisfied with my work https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif Of course I'll share my work with you, fell free to download it and have fun. BTW - click for larger image - 300dpi, but enough to play with.

So here they are:

http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/19448Gauges_1991_Galant_300dpi-med.jpg ('http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/19448Gauges_1991_Galant_300dpi.jpg') http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/194486G-Gauges_MadeBy_Rasko-med.jpg ('http://www.mobisux.com/album/data/500/194486G-Gauges_MadeBy_Rasko.jpg')

OK - this is not finished product, but it is getting almost there... I think they'll be finished tomorow. Posted here, for better view on both - original and my custom Gauges.
When I was scrolling through hundreds of Fonts, I ended up wit this "Porshe" font, lines - pointers stell haven't been touched, but the numbers, all lights and other writings are finished. I applyed a thin layer of Carbon-Fiber Background, so that Gauges wouldn't be so empty - just white-white...
Let me know what you think so far  , maybe you can help me make them even better - but personaly I like them

RU left or right hand drive? Your Fuel and Temp guages are opposite to mine. At least that with Pshop, thats easily modified.

How do you go with scanning something and then printing, i have never been able to do that and end up with a product same size as the original.

Left Hand drive...
In Photoshop you can determine exact size either in inches, centimeters, pixels... etc. So the exact size is not a problem. 8)

By the way - After long hours of work I am steel not finished, I chooce a "PORSCHE" font for numbers wich looks exact like numbers in Porsche cars https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif Damn it looks good.

Actually that's not a bad idea. But first I'd like too see the result of my work - especially in the night. So I'll make some pictures this weekend when I install gauges - than we can arange something if everybody like them so much 8)

I'll need a good, quality picture of scaned gauges for DOHC Galants (GSR and VR-4 are the same I suppose). I can put just new layers of numbers and lines, maybe I can add a 260km/h number if you like  hehehe

We'll talk about that after the result is shown, but I'll be glad too help Australian G-lovers and others with km/h gaguges.

if you would like me to send them to you by email please give me your email address https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

OK, Bali dude has the franchise rights for SE Asia,
I will take Australasia.
Jeuken takes Western Europe, any more?

as for the glow has anyone thought of this? the suggestion (somewhere else) was to print out the guages on half mm (or 1) thick Polythingyate sheet.

well why cant we get a blue translucent poythingyate sheet, and when printing the guages, where the numbers are, the printer doesnt print. that way the back light makes em glow.

or if its not possible to find that kind of Poly, then find a clear one, and paint it first Blue, with special ink i suppose. then overpaint it white and leave the gaps, kinda like screen printing.

Dunno about where you are rasko, but i am sure Bali Orang might just know someone that could make these, and at a good price too.

Of course I'll post some pictures - but I just couldn't wait to tell you mates that they look really nice when printed out!

Great stuff, and plastificied is much better than embalming them.

I cant wait to see it, in fact i am gunna sit here all night and wait....

But today I was thinking...
Maybe it is OK if I just put them in just like they are now. I can't wait too 8)

Tomorrow morning I am going to Germany for 2 days (business trip). So on friday when I'm back I'll put them in and post pictures... https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

I was just thinking... 8)

If you could somehow install a blacklight tube in front of and above the gauge faces, they would illuminate by themselves since the new faces are white and should reflect the blacklight in a way similar to the way electro-luminescent gauges light up. Of course you'd have to do it so that the tube itself doesn't show....

An easier way to make the light shine through the laminated (or plastificied, if you're looking to chat up girls talking about your car mods) paper would be to replace the gauge illumination bulbs for some slightly more powerful ones.

I think I would be able to fit a blacklight without too much hassle...if only it weren't so damn cold outside https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

Rasko, I would very much appreciate it if you could do some additional photoshopping for me. As we spoke of earlier, I need some of the symbols on the gauge faces to be changed for them to be in accordance with my original ones. I'll take a photo some day soon so you can see what they look like and get to work for me. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

I'm sooooo looking forward to getting these!

plastificied guages might not be so tolerant of the extra heat?
I guess its just a case of trying.

OK my friends... They are in! And they look AWSOME !!! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

I also prepared more pictures - and when I'll have time I'll make a tutorial about the whole project...

i'd love if you could reply to my email with some ones made up for me (with the template i sent you)!!!

so, you printed them out on photo quality paper and then laminated them or what exactly?

it would be REALLY cool if you could make mine look like that! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Bluedraco - I'll do it for you as soon as I have the time. I know that you can't wait, but I'm filed up with work these days and I promise that I'll do something soon.

Pro-sniper - You've got mail https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif Whit gauges as an attachment.

I didn't have them laminated or plastificied... I just put them in as they were. I am totaly satisfied with the result in day-light, bit I'l have to do something with the lighting in the night - it doesn't looks so good as I though it would. I think the best result would be if I could make lights from front and took out the lights behind . that would luuk really great. But again - I'll have to find some time to make this.

Rasko- you are worthy.

Just thinking out loud here.

Perhaps the gauges could be printed onto an Opaque White Translucent type of plastic (easy for an inkjet printer). So that in day time they just have a plain white background. But at night the lights behind the gauges would make the white backgrounds glow, and the numbers will remain black. That could look good?

Alternatively, have the gauges professionaly printed on translucent Blue plastic, and the gauge is printed but the numbers and other indicator marks are left blank, so that the rear light makes the numbers glow.

Aha - so thats the trick!

You make two gauge templates and then stick them together, thats how its done properly. The one at the back with the black body prevents the light from coming through where its not wanted.

Ok. Rasko has given me the custom gauge bug. Just what i needed, another distraction from working :-)

Here is part of something i was working on today, not finished yet, not sure if i will finish it, let alone make them for real, but it's fun to think about it.

Yeh - I know its corny, but then again nobody else has gauges like that :-)

Guess who's started working on his car? https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Removing the speedo housing from the car is every bit as easy as you said, Rasko! Took me a good ten minutes, and I was being careful since I wasn't too sure about how to do it. Next time I remove it it won't even take me five minutes....

Hey, that vertical row of blanks underneath the High beam indicator (which is used for the automatics to show what gear you are in). Has anyone thought of something to make use of that?

Well I was just thinking out loud - no idea if any of these is technically possible or feasable. I think there is 5 spaces.
- A temp guage for cabin temp, in 2degree increments say from 20 to 30. so you know how good your air con is.
- hook it up to your sound system so the lights just go crazy. So you look at the lights instead of the road.
- paint some dice in the squares and do away with the fluffy dice hanging from the mirror.

An since I promissed Bluedraco that I'll made similar gauges for him... I am opening new post for RIGHT Hand drive DOHC owners. Gauges look almost the same, just temperature and fuel signs are changed, and some other signs are made to fit gauges exactly! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

I removed the gauge housing from the car again just now, and did a little measuring work (see pic). The bulb sits in a small chamber of some length(4 cm internal length). So the bulb isn't even near the red plastic that makes the light go red. Since it's so far from the plastic, I highly doubt that neither the red plastic nor the new gauge faces will be warped or overheated in any way.

I'm about to head over to a gas station and buy some stronger bulbs. I'll keep you posted (no pun intended) https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Of course non of the damn gas stations around here had bulbs of that size.... I'll ask around at the mitsu dealership and some other places tomorrow. Somone's bound to be making bulbs like this with higher watt figures, I just gotta find them.
