not sure what turbos a VR-4 uses, but i would start with basic fuel and electronics mods, then move into turbo upgrades. A VR-4 has non-sequential turbos, correct? Is it the same motor as a 3000GT VR-4? If it is, go with a pair of 16g's and work over your fuel systems and management. Two 16's are good for around 750hp on a 3kgt vr-4, and is good for high 12 sec. quarters. Only problem with the 16g's in a 3kgt is it is hard to get clearance for the compressor housing in the motor. Don't know if the galant would have this same problem.

Of course, if it is not he same motor, disregard everything i just said, except for turbo upgrades and fuel/management systems.

I am assuming your 99 VR-4 is claimed by factory to be pushing around 290bhp. To achieve the 400 range putting a bigger turbo doesn't necessarily mean more hp w/o supporting mods. There are guys with 1g's using stock 14b's running consistant 12's. I would start with a fine tuning the air/fuel managment (S-AFC), larger downpipe and exhaust (Spool the turbo quicker), a good FMIC to get more cold dense air and probably redo the stock intercooler piping while you are at it. With those mods you will probably get the most those stock turbos will shell out then when you upgrade to new turbo(s) you have the supporting mods to accomodate it then you can get into internal upgrades.

the 99 vr-4 has a 6a13 motor in it. uhm, this motor isn't used here in the US so there isn't alot of people here in the US that would be a specialist on these specific motors. you can look to japan and the rest of the world since they DO use this motor and see what they are doing.

Now this is a truely interesting topic..go figure.

Who ever said rippmods should do alittle research on the vr4 twin 9b's dah

Scootin: its a 2.5L version of the 3000gt' motor using I believe the same stock turbo's TD04-09B-6cm2.

cjeffery: Direct bolt replacements are TD04-13G-6cm2 and TD04-15G-6cm2 Im not going to go into further detail about the motor until i see more info about the new owner of a galant vr4. PIctures of your car, hell where are you from?? Just curious..

Yea he can but its not like we dont have that car already here in the states https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif Any tuner shop can tune/upgrade anycar, by going to a uK site sometimes it gets your hopes up for parts that take years to get shipped here https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif I know first hand. Nevertheless I have been a member of the clubvr4 following for awhile.

hi mate

I got the 6A13 motor in a FTO and I am getting 400 Hp at the front wheels on 18 Lb boost but I have replaced the two Turbos with one single Garrett GT30 big front mount Intercooler aftermarket ECU upgraded fuel system twin plate clutch. Custom manifolds inlet and exhaust full 3 inch free flow S/S exhaust external waste gate, I recommend not to run this motor above about 14Lb boost unless you want to melt pistons. I am currently on my second motor and will be rebuilding the other one with forged pistons and rods. but to get 450 Hp at the wheels i suggest you do the engine internals first then go with a single turbo, bigger front mount intercooler, aftermarket ECU, full fuel system upgrade, 3 inch freeflow exhaust and you will have to upgade your clutch or strengthen your auto box

Great place to start, I recently picked up a 99 vr4 myself but the good thing is I have a spare 6a13 to build up first. Which Rods are you upgrading to and where are you purchasing them from? If you can remember did you add a Boost controller before doing the turbo up grade? If so what was the max boost you set the 9b's to and what whp did it yield?

umm, no. The spare has even less miles and will serve as being built up then swapped in.

Still looking a couple of options but leaning towards custom JE pistons and crower or pauter 4340 crome molloy rods. currently sourcing prices do you know any where you can get a good price? The boost controller is built into the ECU I had it running at at least 18 Lb boost but was doing 250Kms an hour when the piston let go and was under full boost in top gear. I believe it was due to fuel leaning out due to the two extra injectors as i am currently running 2 extra injectors with the stock 390cc injectors, waiting on some denso 590cc injectors to arrive from japan next week and will be installing them with an extra fuel pump and surge tank, currently running the walbro 255Ltr/H fuel pump from a skyline with malpassi RRFPR. the max boost was 18 Lb and got just over 400 Hp
