Looked into extra key/s for my G since I locked myself out and swore to get an extra. Found out it has elctronics inside. I see some on ebay for around $20 I can get it cut at my work but the ebay ad said it may need programmed? Anybody know anything about this? or is it something best left to dealership wonder how much they charge?
yup to use the key to start the car, you are gonna have to get the keys programmed. its a security thing. you can get a regular key and get that cut and it will unlock stuff, but it won't start your car. there's a lil chip that prevents you from starting the car without that lil chip. but yea its tru you got to get the key programmed. not just the new key, but all the keys you will use to start up the car.

i have akey in my remote start box.. would i need ot take that out as well if i wanted a new key?
That's exactly what I was referring to above. The key is in a transponder by-pass box - most likely a 555U unless it's mfr-specific. Did you install the alarm yourself? If so, did you have an extra key already? If not, the place that did the install had to program a new key for the installation. Just one, not both...Quote:

all i want is a key to get me in and throw in my wallet. Now lets say I want to get a transponder key made from my regular key (suppose if I lose my trans key) they can program a new one without a original right?
i remember when my cousin went to install the remote starter in her car. i had to run around and collect all the keys for her car, cuz they needed it for the install. but if they reprogram, they change that ffrequency...then the key in the alarm wouldn't work.Quote:

well i bought a key from ebay awhile ago. Its a mitsubishi blank key but i didn't have to have anything reprogrammed. just took it to get cut and it works fine,i have a 99 not sure if that matters. Didn't know mitsu keys had chips in em
Alright guys, one final question.
All i really need a spare key for, is incase i lock my keys in my car. So if I got another key fromthe dealer cut, and not programmed, would I still be able to unlock the door?

You can get a key that will unlock doors and truck cut at your local hardware store. To have one that starts the car it must be programmed, now I had to get one programmed and it cost me here in TN 81.00! :evil: But if you just need a spare go in your wallet like you said in case you lock you keys in the G again then go to your local hardware store and have one cut, and it will unlock doors and trunk just wont start.

I'm going to try a hardware store but i doubt they have it if walmart don't. Maybe the keys an odd one since walmart dont carry the blank?

the 99's didn't have the transponder key. it just had a regular key.
This is real late, but I have all the answers... I did the research for my own knowledge before I joined TGC, and now that I'm here I'll let y'all know.
On the 8g models, yes they use transponder keys, and normal copies won't work. However, if you get ther remote start, most of you that got the remote start were given back one key less than you dropped off right? that's becaus ethat key is now in the remote start box, so now, since that security method is bypassed, you can use normal keys to start the car. (providing that the key is cut to match your car) Basically, someone could steal your car now if they can get past the cylinder.
This info was given to me by the guy that installed my remote start, if it doesn't worl, tell me so I can hit the guy.
I'm not sure about the other cars, but yes the 2003 uses a transponder (I'm thinking RFID), this is called Electronic Immobilizer. You can't use a copy key you got from Wally World to start the car and run. You can actually start the car, but it shuts off after 10 seconds. So best thing to do is go to your local dealer (or you can buy blanks on Ebay). The programming you can do yourself, the instructions are in the owner's manual. For those without, I'll post it here verbatim (and plus I'm so new here, I need to make friends):
Caveats:
Electronic immobilizer is not compatible with remote starting systems. Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting problems and a loss of security protection.
Customer Key Programming
You can program new keys to the system if you have two valid (already registered) keys by doing the following:
1. Insert the first valid key into the ignition and turn the ignition to the "ON" position for 5 seconds.
2. Turn the ignition to the "OFF" position and remove the first key.
3. Insert the second valid key and switch the ignition to the "ON" position within 7 seconds. Theft-alarm indicator will blink twice. Turn the ignition to the "OFF" position and remove the second key.
4. Insert a blank (transponder) key, specially cut for your vehicle at your Mistubishi Dealer, into the ignition and switch the ignition to the "ON" position within 7 seconds.
The theft-alarm indicator will come on for about 3 seconds when the registration is completed. If an error occurs, the indicator will blink 3 times.
5. If you want to register additional keys, repeat step 4 within 30 seconds after the theft-alarm indicator flashes in step 3.
NOTE
You are provided with 2 keys, but you may add up to 6 more keys.
Replacement Keys
Only keys that have been programmed to the vehicle electronics can be used to start the vehicle.
If you lose the key, you can order a key from your authorized Mitsubishi dealer by referring to the key number.
You will also need to change your ID code to prevent vehicle theft. Take your vehicle and any remaining keys to your authorized Mitsubishi dealer for consultation.
I only had 2 keys and we lost one of them... I have an aftermarket remote start and I don't think there's a key in it...
So, I would like to get some replacement keys and get them and the immobilzer reprogrammed to a new code (so that the lost key can't be used).
Is the dealer (~$130) my only option? Might I be able to get it done for less at a locksmith (the ones I called before said they couldn't)?
