parked on ice engine shuts down

i live in nyc ,the bronx.and yesterday i parked on ice not noticing .when i came back to leave.the wheels kept spinning.i have a 94 galant stock.i put the gear in L (low) and i kept forcing it.then the engine shuts off.but the radio stayed on and other stuff.but then right away i turned the key back to start the car and it turned on just normally fine.but this engine shut off ,what could it mean.cuz 2 months ago my alternator went dead(after 10 year life) so it has a new one installed.so no problem with the new battery and the new alternator.i know that when in low gear .it got to 5 th rpm and thats when it shut down.does the computer shut downs the engine to warn me that i was forcing it too much.cuz then i shovel'd my way out of that ice so that the galant could roll out normally
