if you have an 02+ then its a cali spec automatically.
if you have a 99-01. well. if you have the heat shield removed or you can see behind the heat shield that would be a plus. if your manifold looks like a pile of mashed potatoes then its a cali spec. if it looks similar to aftermarket headers then its a fed spec.
if you have more than one cat converter then its a cali spec
if you have a wire (o2 sensor) going into the exhaust manifold its a cali spec
I was wondering the same thing...pinoy (or anyone else) do you have pics of the exhaust manifolds of a fed spec and cali spec side by side...I searched and thought I remember seeing a post on it here before but I can't find it anymore
I was thinking are there some cali spec cars (99-01) out there that don't have the mashed potato (as you put it) exhaust manifold but have more than one cat or have a wire going into the exhaust?
The reason I ask is cause, I thought I had a fed spec car (base on the fact that its an '00 and exhaust looks like aftermarket headers). But I've had a SES light and had the code pulled. It says that catalyst value returned low, bank 1 of 2 (PO421 if I recall). If the cat (whichever one it is) is bad I want to get it replaced (along with new O2 sensors) but I'm not sure what to buy (if cat #1 is physically different than cat #2) or if I can just by a generic ones for 100 or so...

internal and external..
should i get both of them since i'm going to do trans service?
i don't think it would matter for a gasket would it? even if they have different part numbers, still might be the same thing

from what i can understand and the pic of the engine i believe i got a cali spec...
read the emission sticker on the hood.
it gives year, engine size, and all the drivetrain specs you need.

No, not all, but most. I don't know if you remember, but TOC8G had a Fed spec I4 and it got wrecked.Quote:

The easiest way is to look for the O2 sensor. On the I4 Galants like in FinalLast's pic above, you can look down under the heat shield and see the O2 sensor sticking out which means Cali spec. On a Fed spec, you won't see the O2 sensors because they will be under the car before and after the main cat. And with the V6 Galants, the Cali specs have the O2 sensors sticking right out of the top of the manifolds and through the heat shields. On Fed spec V6 Galants, you won't see the O2 sensors, just like the I4 Fed specs.Quote:

the cali spec cars were sold all over the US. not just cali. they call it the cali spec car cuz it meets califonia's strict emission standards. the fed spec cars didn't.
