post paint work is also important and often overlooked. color sanding and buffing will help bring out the full potential of a good paint job.
If I want my car painted (unless I'm doing the painting) the prep work is not my responsibility. Its the responsibility of the body shop doing the paint work. If they elect not to do an adequate job of preping the car than I'd recommend taking your business elsewhere.Quote:

Nowhere did the OP say that he thought the idea of prepping the car himself was out of the question. He simply asked for an affordable way to get his car painted, which doing the prep work yourself would be the most affordable way.Quote:

The MOST affordable way to get his car painted is to do the prep work himself since that's the majority of the labor involved in painting the car, and doesn't require any particular skills other than being able to clean, sand, and mask.
the real problem with the cheap maaco paint jobs is that they spray one step enamel.
maybe they use quality paint, maybe they don't. regardless, its going ot have a lot of orange peel, and won't have the depth of shine that a 2 step will, not to mention they WILL fade.
if you go to maaco, make sure you are getting a two step :base and clear.
I wouldn't sacrifice quality for affordability, I don't think you would either. I was just merely stating that you should get it done right once. That way it doesn't have to be redone again.Quote:

Personally, my car got fully prepped (cleaning, body filler, sanding, masking), painted with Spies Hecker metallic paint and Spies Hecker catalyzed clearcoat, color sanded, and polished for $800 on top of my body repair. You really just have to shop around and find a good shop.
and if you go to Maaco make sure they have a booth, not some hole in the back that empty.
This is very true. Any paint job you get should be in a booth :lol:Quote:

i got my car done at MAACO and it came out how i wanted it to come out. I did pay about $2500 and they did a base coat and clear coat, in addition i went daily to check on the progress of the vehicle to make sure that they were doing their job. I know a guy though that will do a base coat and urethane coat for $2500 cash and will make it look incredible. $3500 he can do clear coat. He'll make it look like glass. I notice that there are little places that they could have touched up and what i am most upset about is that when they did the primer stage on my car, they didn't cover my rims!! so there was overspray on portions of my rims so instead of being a glossy black like they used to be, i now have half dull black, thats not smooth, and half glossy black. I am very upset at this and as a result i had to get the rims professionally serviced to refinish the paint. They are good if you take it ready to paint only and prep yourself, but i highly suggest maybe looking for legit painters that have had a lot of good rep and all.
Just for kicks, i went to Anaheim Auto Body and Paint, which is well known for handling prestigious vehicles daily, i got a quote there to have my 99 ES look flawless and i was quoted about $6000. yeah... I'll submit some photos of my car.
I paid $4500 for my paint job. Got all of the dings, rust out, fitted all the JDM parts. fixed all the folded parts, attached the cut lip spoiler, trimmed rear fenders, 3 stage paint.
Is maaco paint better than the paint our g's come stock with??
It depends on the quality of finishing mostly. But factory paintjobs are almost always best.Quote:

Now i earn over 400k a year and work 2-3 hour days( uncle sam takes most of it away  ). so to answer the question, no it dosent have to be cheap but even though i make decent money i would rather spend a few grand on headers and software or an exhaust system than get an expensive paintjob on my wonderful GTZ. Thanks for all the thoughts thats what im liking about this forum is that so many of you voice your different opinions and no one gets all but hurt about it. thanks again
