at the dealership by my house, it costs $50 for a key and $80 to program it. the programming is good up to 2 keys. so for another $50 you can buy a new set of keys. i asked if i could bring in my own keys that i can find on ebay for $5 and they said they dont honor "aftermarket" keys.
the same with locksmiths in my area. it costs $90 for a new programmed key and i cant bring my own.
Yeah, I just talked to a local dealer and they'll reprogram for $50, if I bring the already cut keys. If they have to cut them, they will charge me additionally, as if they were new keys.
I didn't tell 'em that I plan to get aftermarket/non-dealer ones tho.
I'll take 'em to Home Depot or Walmart and get them cut (only $1 each), then take 'em over to the dealer.
you can go on EBAY and order from street keys or you can even go on their website . and as far as programming goes, they send you a voucher I believe or you call them once you get the keys and they have you meet up with a person that can program them for you. I know people that have done this for their galant
^^Yeah, I did send 'em an Ebay-email asking what that voucher costs. In the auction I saw, they said you can purchase it separately in the Ebay store... but I did not find any specific voucher info (haven't heard back yet).
So, I also did an Internet search for the StratTec key # 598992 (2000 Galant) and there are alot of sites out there that sell the keys, lowest being $10.25 each and there are some locksmiths ou there with the equipment to do it.
So, it does look like we have options. I replaced my battery in my car awhile back and now my remote start isn't working. I'm thinking that I may need to reprogram the alarm and to also see if I have a transponder-bypass deal built into my alarm.
During my search, I saw some transponder-bypass modules for common alarm systems for about $35. Don't know enough about 'em to comment, but thought it was worth mentioning.
Wow, this thread is two years old. Thanks to whoever necro'd it, you clown.
Im just throwing this out there.... I dont know if its a good idea.... 01on20inch.... took the chip out of the key and placed it on his transmission.... or his starter....or something...lol and he can use any key to start his car up.... well no transponder key
^^mine is the same way, that's what was done for the remote starter in my car. And I really don't think it was such a great idea, well at least if you don't have an alarm, cause any key that is cut for your car will infact start your car and there goes that method of preventing it from being stolen.
Ummm... Most forums encourage the use of the "search feature," so that you can see previously discussed info, before asking silly questions? I brought it back up because it's relevant. I would've thought it'd be appreciated, but why would you even bother to post (except to increase your post count), and not contribute to the topic at all? If you're not going to contribute, STFU. Thank you.Quote:

I guess I need to reprogram the alarm and then use a non-chipped key to see what it does. I believe that once the alarm has been inactivated, it will let you use a non-chipped key. So, even tho you can use a non-chipped key to start and drive the car, you still have to inactivate the alarm (or use the remote start) to do so.
As it is, I tried to remote start it and I did get the "flashing key" light from the dash. I don't think it will still look for a chipped key once I program it again. I'll let ya know what I find.
that output is for the factory bypass as if u already had a alarm bypass in it and will not work without a factory or aftermarket bypass im told.. an after market bypass has to be programmed correctly or u have to leave a key inside.. if u do have a factory bypass because u had the remote start from factory than u r str8 with that output.. Thats what i have but u just plain cant start the car without the key.. i love that feature because u cannot jack the car without the key -- if u try to remote start, cross wires to the starter or anything the car will not start unless u have the programmed key..
damn....i'm glad one of my buddies is a licensed locksmith....
The chip inside the key isn't actually a chip at all. It is actually a resistor, that has a very specific resistance. If you try to use a key that does not have the corresponding resistance, the car refuses to stay running.
If you have a remote start, than you had to sacrifice a key (or they used a ghetto adjustable res (aka pot) to get the car started), now you can use any key, chipped or not.
i have an 03 with viper remote start so i had to sacrifice a key. my wife still has a key with a chip so i had one made because i still needed one for the ignition. i had one made, curious i wanted to see it it started. id did at first till the computer didnt receive the "signal" and cut the engine. this is the light i got.

didnt even know that was there on the dash. lol
Actually the "chip" in the key of a g transmits a unique rf tag. Which is picked up by an antenna ring around the key cylinder. The resistor thing you're talking about is the black pellet gm used in their cars during the 90s. 2 totally and completely different anti theft systems.Quote:

Cost me a total of about $90 to have 2 more working/programmed keys.
ya. i did the street keys thing too. i asked the locksmith they sent me to, how much does he normally charge when not dealing with streetkeys and i think he said it was $80 a key normally. 2 for $100 is not a bad dealQuote:

So, for a remote start, just order a key from Ebay (~15 shipped), program it yourself, then use it as the one you put in the remote start module. Don't have to get it cut or anything (which I think is probably better, since it's left in the car and won't be usable, except for sending a signal). Meaning that since it's not cut, it can't turn any of the key cylinders. A good theif could find it and use it otherwise.
