Perfect 8g V6 Tranny Swap

one thing that needs a correction is that the 01 passenger side axle is like the 99-00 axles. the auto tranny axle is too long so u need the axle from the manual tranny.

I'm changing my shift knob again. I got a sick deal on the new MR one. I love this clutch, great minds think alike eh https://www.thegalantcenter.org/styl...fault/wink.gif.... I have the stage 2 though. The pedal is really really nice.

Interesting note on the axle. The other guy here with a v6 swap.. 8gV65spd didn't replace axles, although his donor car was an 03 V6 Eclipse. Gotta love Mitsubishi and its different year parts.

Hey frank your lucky you dont have an 01+ 4cyl galant. After 2000, Mitsu decided to switch their axle manufacturer for the 4cyl axles. Quaife modeled the LSD off the 1999/2000 axle, so the newer models need to use old axles or have their LSD sent back to Quaife to get re-machined. The end of the axle where the locking ring is that goes into the trans is different, the length between the locking ring and the end of the axle is longer on the 01+ cars, but when you install the axles you cant tell, once you shift hard into a gear the axle pops out of the trans and you dump your gear oil all over the place.

Congrats, it is good to see another v6 5spd. I hope to see some at the MN-August meet! Have Fun! By the way I think quaife came out with an LSD for the later model Eclipse tranny. When I was doing my swap they had mention the troubles some people had that you were speaking of and said that they were redesigning a for the later model.

From the questions you've asked it sounds like you are also doing a swap https://www.thegalantcenter.org/styl...ault/laugh.gif i don't know the width of the brake pedal but i have my stock m/t brake pedal cover if you want it, just pm me you address. There are 3 mounts on the tranny(front,rear,top). The front and rear you can reuse from the auto one, but you need a new top m/t mount. As for the shifter line it works like this, If you move the shifter from left to right the shifter assembly is suppost to get pushed in or pulled out.

Did some parts checking on the net, and it looks like the axles are the same for the 02-up 3G auto/manual and 8Gs.

Also, I don't have the tranny on yet, but as it sits, the end of the fork is currently sitting away from the slave cylinder. Does the fork get pushed back when installed with all the stuff (clutch, flywheel, etc), so that it contacts the slave cylinder pin?

I also call the local dealership parts dept., and the guy there said the slave cylinder pin goes directly onto the fork - no ball joint or anything like that. Is that correct?

The slave cylinder pin goes right into the tip of that fork sticking out. The slave cylinder is like a finger that pushes that fork to pull out the center of the pressure plate when pushing the clutch pedal in.

I'm somewhat intimate with the 5spd tranny as I've done a few clutch/flywheel installs but in reality everything is pretty straight forward really.

The throw out bearing (which is tricky as hell to disengage) connects into the center hub of the pressure plate when the engine & tranny are mated so at that time the fork does go the other way how you are thinking.

Did you guys have to remove the center crossmember to get the transmission out?

No other way to get it out unless you lifting it out of the bay. 7G's are easy to do cuz you can change the engine without having to remove the axles, tranny or anything. Taking out the tranny from the bottom is way easier than taking it out from the top.

Grrr, the transmission bolts at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock position (facing the engine from the drivers side) are a b*tch to get at. :x

Get a cold one and keep going!

I noticed that you don't have part #1 (plate) installed - is that needed? DId you install the spacer, part #2, as well?

This also goes for the i4 guys, when you are using an aftermarket flywheel you don't need to use those plates.

How the heck do you get the old shifter assembly out? Aside from the center console, etc, do you have to remove all the crap (looks like the heater core, etc) to get it out, or is there an easier way?

im using a stock flywheel with aftermarket clutch never reinstalled any of the plates. Have no problems and its been over 5 moths now

If its not one thing its another - am trying to fit the Spec Stage 2 clutch onto the fidanza flywheel, but the metal dowels seem too big for the holes in the clutch plate - I can rotate the plate a bit, and the dowel will fit into the next hole, but that hole I believe should be for the bolts (bolt -> dowel -> bolt).

Anyone experience the same problem?

Any tips on maneuvering the F*CKING transmission into the car? I've scratched the hell out of my clutch cover plate trying to get the f*ckin' thing in there - I keep hitting things here and there - I dont have any of the mount brackets on, or any other bracket on for that matter - I even remove part of the shifter control just to barely clear the frame of the car. I've been trying to get the damn thing in the car for the past 2 days :evil:

If I didn't have the flywheel or clutch on, I'm sure the transmission would slip right in. But of course I can't do that :-?
