Money.
where do u get that gasket? i need to order one for my gfs 7 bolt. got a link?
Yeah i replaced the thermostat when i built it, be very suprised if its blown, if it gets hard to start then i'll replace it
I'd rather have running abit cool than hot
Which gasket? Regardless check Mitsubishiparts.com and go digging.
the oil filter housing gasket.
I got mine with the engine gasket kit I bought on eBay. The kit was actually really nice and came with good thick gaskets in the right spots. I don't remember the seller name of the seller though and it is off my recent buy list now.
yea i use the evergreen shit. I dont think ours came with the coolant sandwich gasket though.
Turns out my A/C fan wiring job wasn't quite right so I went back in and changed it up a bit. Turns out the A/C compressor relay uses a positive feed for a trigger instead of a ground like the fan relays do. To fix it I ended up permanently grounding pin 1 (the trigger wires) for both low-speed fan relays. Then I routed pin 3 (power) of both relays to pin 1 of the A/C compressor relay. Now when the A/C button is pushed the low-speed relays get power to trip on and kick the fans into motion. Since all pins 1 and 3 do is trip the relay (pin 5 supplies power to the fans) it shouldn't draw much current away from pin 1 of the A/C relay.
I also found out what happens when the high speed kicks on with the A/C on. The fans just spin a little faster getting both low/high on than with the high on/low off. So long as it doesn't burn out the motors that'll work great.
My buddy Rick finished up the stand-offs for my front Tein spring perches. I'll be picking those up in an hour or so. They should be a nice improvement over the stock perches as they'll incorporate coaxial spring perches and get rid of some of that icky rubber hampering the capability of my Koni's. :)
Minor updates: did a compression test a couple weeks ago and had perfect 150 across the board. I'm at 7600 feet elevation so that is around 200 at sea level. I kept having issues with pushing coolant into the overflow and overheating though. After replacing the thermostat and buying a 1.1 bar rad cap I noticed the overflow cap had a crack in the feed/return elbow. Turns out that was probably my problem all along. I must have been sucking air in through it and never getting my coolant back in. I epoxied that up today and it appears to have solved the issue. I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
I also found out Rick has a buddy in Pagosa who used to own a tuning shop in Florida. He's going to help get my tune spot-on so I can get the most I can out of this beast. Classes start back up in just over a week so I'm hoping to take care of that very soon.
Oh, I also had my A/C fan melt. Not sure if it was the extra heat from the super high speed and not having a heat shield on the O2 housing or what. the passenger side fan is fine. I'm ordering up a heat shield and will pick up a "new" fan once that is resolved.
I broke my car.
Well, part of it. I'm not sure on the extent of the damage. I went over to Rick's house to get some work done on the car and got some help tuning. On the way home tonight this guy in a truck wanted to race me so I blew his doors off and then a BANG and screeching and awful, scary sounds came from my car. I dove for the shoulder, grabbed the flashlight and checked for damage. I looked underneath and part of my drive shaft was hanging down, the exhaust was sagging and oil was dripping from somewhere. I popped the hood and saw oil spray in the engine bay. Thought I'd totally lunched my new engine. We'd pushed the timing up to 20* at WOT and it made me nervous. Dude who egged me on pulled over behind me and came to check out what happened. I was all sorts or scared that I'd ruined my new engine. I decided fuck it, if it is toast cranking it over won't make it worse. I turned the key and sighed a huge sigh of relief as everything fired up and idled smooth as could be. So for now it looks like all the new torque and higher speed I was going just put out more than the drive shaft could handle. I'll be towing it home in the morning and checking out the full extent of the damage. Pictures will be included.
maybe it wasn't motor oil, maybe it was gear oil. Have you beefed up any tranny parts? LSD? How was the drive shaft built? The Drive shaft was probably the "weakest link" at this stage of your build. Glad to hear the engine is ok. It's a fear i have of letting someone do the same to my car. Great tuners are often known for pushing cars to their limits and sometimes beyond. Especially when it's someone else's car...
Pretty sure it was motor oil. I need a new dip stick. It popped out with the pressure. The tranny just went through a full rebuild and shot peening of all the gears. It should be fine. I'll go collect the beast and whatever parts I can find after I've had some coffee and breakfast.

This is from the back. Notice the rear section of drive shaft jumped up over the exhaust and wedged itself in:

Here's the broken off end of the rear section:

I was trying to pull the front drive shaft off and noticed the transfer case wiggling so I put the camera up in and took a shot:

I ended up having to pry the shaft out with a wrench. It had managed to stick on pretty well which meant I didn't have to hunt any parts down along the road.
Here is the section that broke off:

Thankfully this section should be salvageable from my other transfer case. I was planning on replacing the rear seal but this wasn't how I wanted to go about doing it! I think the combination of the drive shaft splitting and bouncing around plus the exhaust getting wedged down against the transfer case and against the ground is likely what caused the break. I did idle the car the whole way home with no issues and once in my street I drove it up into the driveway under it's own power. No weird sounds so I think I'm ok besides the obvious damage. There was oil spray on the engine but I'm sure it was from the dip stick.
Odd timing to shoot a video I know but here is a clip of the engine running and a quick look under the car plus the muffler.

Sheesh.
Well certainly could have been worse.
Drive shaft seems kind of thin for your power level.
Well it turns out the center housing was toast as well as a bearing in the t-case. I ordered up the new parts and put it back together. Now I'm seeing the shaft going out of the t-case may be bent. When I turn the gears the output shaft is scribing a circular path rather than staying centered in the neck of the rear housing. Looks like I'll need to buy a t-case after all.
I am making some progress on the carrier bracket for the additional carrier bearing. I pulled the bracket out of the Talon donor and formed it to fit into the same location in the Galant.

You can see that it is too long and that some of the sections will have to be cut off. The spacing on the passenger side is very tight. It is a close call on getting the carrier bearing spacers and nuts in there but they do fit. Right now it is only held in with steel rivets but it will get welded in too.
On the right hand side of the photo you can see where part of the body of the car got beaten up in by the drive shaft when it broke. Here is what that looks like from the inside.

You can't see much but that area should look a lot more concave and beveled. It actually has a sharp crease in one section where it pressed the metal up.
Jesus man, you were very lucky the rear section got wedged in between the exhaust and didnt dig into the ground and flip the car!
The Galant made it back onto the road today with the new three-piece drive shaft. The added drive-shaft bearing takes up a ton of room. The exhaust is a very tight fit but it is in. It had to hang a little bit lower. I'll get pictures up soon.

MORE PICTURES!
Awesome work.
That actually looks a little straighter, or it may just be me.....
Did you mod the GSX Driveshaft or is that another custom piece Driveshaft?
I'd torn down the GSX shaft to make the last one. Thankfully I'd saved the other parts of it including the u-joint and the carrier bearing (go packrat!) This is the same rear section but with new pipe for the front section with the added u-joint and bearing. I'm betting the lengths are similar to a stock GSX shaft. If I were doing it again I could probably have set the carrier bearings in locations such that I'd have only needed to change one length instead of all three. The front bracket is in the same spot they used in a 2g GSX, ie. directly underneath the front rail the seats bolt onto. In the GSX they share the same spot welds everywhere except in the top of the tunnel.
The two new sections ran $150 plus $20/ea for three new u-joints for a total around $210.
I've been driving my '89 4Runner while the car was down. Got back in the G, hit the highway and went, "Holy shit this thing is fast!" Need to tune the off-boost performance though.
polishmafia, what do you want more pictures of?
Finally shot a video and took some new pictures.

One of these will likely be going into a TGC Calendar. Any suggestions on which one?
That is some epic win right there!!!!
badass Nick!!!!
I totally want to see some gratuitous wet grass open field mayhem in the ES-X!
I like this one the bestQuote:

Wow great job man, and awesome pictures
Here's something interesting. Look carefully at the rear wheel in this picture:
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...h/038-Copy.jpg
See how it has positive camber? With the car sitting still that wheel has slight negative camber. That is some serious bushing diflection right there! Those bushings are still stock. I've got the urethane sitting around but it hasn't gone in yet. You can see some diflection in other photos too. There's also a lot of acceleration squat in the rear of the car.
prothanes or go home. Best mod i've ever done to either of my G's
Awesome photography. Love seeing the G in action.
Hi all. With summer break about to hit I'll be getting back to work on the G. Just three final exams to go (until fall).
I've got a few goodies going in this spring. Specifically, an 8" touch screen, a hacked apart laptop and a 300Wx4 amp. They'll be getting bluetooth, GPS and Ride Runner running on Win7. No more wishing I had the laptop with me to tune the car :D. I've also got some chassis bracing planned and may be building a new, family friendly exhaust.
I'll be sure to post up all the progress, power system diagrams etc. I think this will be a lot of fun!
Upgrading to Werewolf? I've been thinking about it. Having the cell tracing alone makes it seem worth the money.
Can't wait to see what you've got in store for this beast.
If I make enough play money this summer Werewolf would be awesome. Cell tracking would make tuning a whole lot easier. For now, if I can just get the carputer up and going that will be a big step in the right direction.
Yeah i'm planning on picking it up at some point. With gas as high as it is, i can't afford to run rich anymore lol. Dangit I want some AWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME! This is how people should build cars. I'm sick of seeing people buld cars then never drive them. Props to you dude!
I took my last final for the semester Thursday morning, installed the new amp in the car and got it wired to the speakers that afternoon. It sounds really good with my iPod hooked up to it.
So today I went to drive the car while listening to my iPod, got less than a mile from the house and the engine died. I pulled over to restart the car and the power relay for the fuel pump was clicking like mad. I disconnected the battery (love the relay I installed on it!), pulled the fuse on the power feed to the amp, turned the battery back on and tried again. The car cranks over fine, all the lights etc. work but it wont' start. I tried again and the machine gun clicking in the relay started again. I called my wife and she came home to help tow the car back to the house.
I'm thinking something bad happened to the ECU. The same relay goes crazy when the 1g ECU's have leaking capacitors. I'm charging up my Palm to see if it is sending any info to the logger. I'm not sure how anything would have happened. Maybe I had a short somewhere that sent current back through the ECU
that sucks to hear
