My car is so sluggish now!

I have a 2001 I4 with 160,000 miles on it. I have noticed that my car is becoming really sluggish. At first I thought it was all in my head, but I have had to actually change my driving style now. I have to time changing lanes on the E-way so as not to get ran down by other traffic. So here is my question: Could it be that my fuel injectors are dirty? I cant remember if I have ever had them cleaned, nor can I remember having the fuel filter replaced. Will the fuel system cleaning service and fuel filter replacement from Jiffylube be worth the money? I have never used the off the shelf injector cleaners since I thought gas already had cleaning agents in it. Is this all that Jiffylube is really doing when they say "Fuel system cleaning service"? What else could be causing my sluggish acceleration? I also replaced my plugs and wires last summer with OEM plugs and wires.

They just ran a news story about Jiffy Lube stations ripping off costumers by not doing the repairs they promised to do. Here in L.A. Out of 9 JL stations, 5 were ripping customers off. I suggest you take your car to a non-quicky auto service station.

I never take my g to Jiffy Lube.

u can check ur injectors... while the car is running - unplug each one. if, when u unplug them, the motor starts puttering and acting up, the injector is good...

u might also want to check ur tranny fluid... is it sluggish at pick up and then after a while --goes fine? Just check it all out...

hmm... plugs... im sure they are fine cuz its not like the car is "missing", right? u can also check those - by checking for spark... i think that requires two people... u take one plug out and then crank the car...(crank or start??? someone help me out)... the person standing outside should be observing if the plug sparks...if u get spark.. ur plug is good. but i doubt its ur plugs... main things... tranny fluid and fuel injectors ..en mi opinión.

The tranny fluid is about 3 months old so it should still be good. The car is just more sluggish at all speeds when I try to accellerate. Its more noticable on the highway though since I have to damn near floor it to gain any type of speed. Are all of these "Injector cleaner in a bottle" products just a waste of money? I searched on here and see that some people use them and some people say they dont do anything at all. I'm onfused as hell right about now. Thanks all for your suggestions up to this point.

Man I really hope not! I gave it a once over and did not see any cracks, but who knows. How much would a new manifold cost if the one I have does crack?

its not your fuel injectors.

adding "snake oil" crap to the fuel wont help.

is your check engine light on?

My check engine light is not on at the moment. I have not added anything to my fuel since I thought the fuel already had detergents in it. Its looking more and more like I will just have to take it into the dealer next week. My dealer does not charge to look at the car. I'll report back with the findings. One thing I did notice today is the car makes a hissing sound when I turn it off. It sounds like someone when the exhale a breath of air. It does right as the engine shuts down.

If you have an aftermarket intake with a cone filter, this noise is absolutely normal. If you don't, you have a leak in your intake somewhere. Even if you have an aftermarket intake, check the entire path from the filter to the manifold for leaks or cracks.

My intake is stock. I looked for leaks, but have not found any yet. I will continue to check though.

im having the same problem. Im planing on replacing the spark plugs and wires, getting another oil change, and hopefully this helps. But I have noticed my ride is sluggish too. I have to basicly floor it on the free way to gain speed fast enough to keep up.

This continues to sound like your manifold may be cracked. Most of the members that have this happen to reported a sluggish performance. It may not be completely cracked but do a search on the recent threads that even shown pictures of how the throttle body comes right off the manifold.

On the subject of manifolds, anyone have any suggestions on performance intake and exhaust manifolds? I have a slight wheezing sound and I’m figuring that I’m leaking and since I’m leaking I might as well upgrade. I was looking through my jc whitney catalog and they have some options but I’m looking for feedback from anyone who has used specific products, where they got them, how much it costs and any recommendations. Also anyone who has installed a performance intake/filter kit the same, I’m not looking for my car to be loud, I like a more refined sound. I drive a 2000 ES 2.4. The quicker the better cause there is nothing I hate more then my car not running at its best.

Checking the air filter takes no time at all. See if it needs replacing. it might help a little. Better yet get a CAI :-D .
