Cover on or off?

So I gave my engine bay a clean up yesterday, re-sprayed the silver on the plastic engine cover and then added red to the lettering (poorly though). But under the cover I wire brushed the manifold and it came up looking nice. I've had the plastic cover off for a while now ever since I lost the fastener bolts when I did the rebuild so I'm undecided if I should keep it off or not.

What do you guys reckon?

if I keep it off I'm wondering what colour to spray the front rocker cover.

I Agree with Reelax. I wish I had a cover for the 6G72. It looks much nicer than the manifold and valve cover.

haha thanks guys :P I wonder if I should cut the top silver section out to reveal just the manifold runners - I felt with the cover on it just looked too 'plasticky'. Although I'm a bit hesitant to cut the cover as it's not likely I'll find a replacement (new from Mitsubishi are $400 ex Japan).

Just get the cover from the VR-4's, it only covers the plugs.

Off. Engine bays aren't supposed to be encased in take-out boxes.

I always thought that those covers cause retain more heat in the engine bay. I read that somewhere.

so wont fit man, MIVEC rocker covers are completely different to the normal DOHC ones. If you look closely you'll see how the bottom part of the rocker cover is raised up to meet the edge of the plastic cover.

yeah and it's usually a trouble for the later model engines with coil packs on top of the spark plugs, but my coil packs are attached to the side of the head where there's plenty of ventilation.

he's in new zealand. I've seen a couple of guys with pics on here with the mivec. One thread comes to mind from a couple of years ago, there were several 7g's and a couple of 8g's vr4's and mivecs that had a mini meet. it was a rainy/ overcast day in a small parking lot.

thank god theres at least one person that agrees with me. plastic doesnt belong in an engine bay :P

I'd say leave it on too. I remember some time ago someone with an 8G posted a pic of their engine bay with a cover from a Diamante. Can't remember if it was a 6G72 or 4G64, but it looked pretty good. I always thought about doing it too.

Edit: Must have been a 6G72 seeing that the Diamante is a 6G74.

yup it's a E54A VX-R from '93 (jap imported), less than 1000 made. 200hp (as opposed to the VR-4's 240), same brake and suspension package as the VR-4, same interior and exterior trim etc.

FTO engine is orientated the other way around in the engine bay, so the heads aren't interchangable (but the block is). Mine's also got MD (modulated displacement) which shuts off one bank of cylinders when not required whereas the FTO doesn't. Take that Chrysler 300C - Mitsubishi did it 15 years before you did!

All the wiring and things under the cover are really untidy - I guess they intended the cover to stay on so they never bothered making it looking pretty.

Yeah I like how the cover goes around the manifold runners, you still see the engine but they cover up the untidy bits. I had a look at mine and if I chopped out the grey top section it wouldn't quite be inline and the runners are all drunk going on an angle etc.

You could modify the VR-4 one to fit, as the bottom holes look to line up fine :D

when I had my spare DOHC heads I took the cover off and tried and they didn't - the width, depth and length was all different. The DOHC has a deep valley for the spark plugs and leads while the MIVEC doesn't, instead it has deep tubes and the plug leads fouled on the DOHC cover also.
