I've seen a few CAI kits with these, and just shields themselves...
Anybody have a source for this item? Or if anyone has an extra lying around...

Injen and amsoil has them. I Have the injen one.
I didn't use one, and I drove through 4 inches of water every spring and early summer, and I had that cai for 2+years
Every situation is different, I had a Short Ram on my 3G and my GF took it on a day we had alot of rain.....SMH
.....I have now idea how she managed to get water in the engine bay but it happened. Filter was soaked. SMH...
With just a short ram? WTF? The filter has to be submerged in water completely to cause damage. lol
yeah I know how that goes lol, but come to think about it, I never got water in the pipes, but I have had the filter freeze before, err ice over, car would not start lol
a side note. If your filter gets wet due to rain some drops will splash the MAF sensor. If the Maf sensor resistor gets wet the engine will shut off on you since is not receiving the proper reading of the air coming in and injector wont fire. All you need to do is change the filter with a dry one and clean or dry the MAF. Dont think is hydrolock. keep a spare filter.
what kind of intake is it (brand)? just convert to short ram during rainy months, it only takes like 10 minutes to remove the extension pipe and transfer the filter from the pipe to the maf adapter.
I have the AEM CAI.
so do i. there is an option for the AEM CAI... AEM bypass valve. it opens if there is a significant drop in the lower pipe (like when the filter is submerged). you can see the bypass valve (w/ foam cover/filter) which is installed between the lower pipe and the MAF adapter. i have never needed a splash shield and my filter sits right behind a mesh opening on my bumper.

Ah, interesting...
I think it would be better to have the bypass then to have a water sock over the filter IMO, more peace of mind
They can be had for cheaper on ebay...look for the ones that are black in color by the seller. That's the color mine was. You just basically buy by the deminsions of your air filter, and the inlet diameter of your intake.
you can buy most aftermarket cone air filters from most auto places
just my thinking, as for just a splash guard, provided there is no high water crossing, just protection from puddles, making one out of aluminum or painted steel sheet metal (all that is left is figuring out how to attach it to a coupler) is one option
also relating to ^, this same sort of considerations should be considered with lots of driving on grave
but, yeah, a two piece CAI with a bypass filter is one very good way to avoid the danger of hydrolocking
If anyone has short ram, you can make a splash guard out of sheet metal as said above. I did mine in less than an hours time. Three mounting holes are already there from the stock air box to secure the splash guard.
The actual heat shield/splash guard around the filter is just a generic ebay one for $10, which I had powdercoated metallic silver.

why would u need a splash guard w/ a short ram? a short ram puts the filter very high in the engine bay... it would take a gigantic puddle to reach that high (like a puddle that would flood the interior of the car)!
We get tons of rain here in Pennsylvania, and paired with crap roads that have 6" pot holes, and the fact that I live in the lowest part of the valley......I just like to be cautious. I get bored, and like making stuff too...lol. Probably don't need it 95% of the time, but it's there if I need it.
It looks nice man. Why not make a custom exhaust manifold cover than replace and powedercoat?
Now that I think about it, I guess I could huh. I may just try that man.
Matching it to your splash shield would look pretty sharp. You can even get away with a custom engraving on it.
