    Dynomax full Cat-Back woes...revisited :)

Well, finally, the new Dynomax cat black a few of us ordered through a GB is here!!!! Looks great!! I'll put this on tonight or tomorrow morning and we'll see how it looks and sounds!!! We got the GB price of 370 shipped, and hopefully everyone else can get it for a good price through Advance Discount Autoparts!

I hope the tip coming off of that muffler is really long or it's going to be too short to fit a Galant.

  5. #5
Yeah, the muffler extends about 18 inches I'd say....

Hey I thought I saw somewhere that this was done through the Advance Auto Parts store in Daytona. Is that correct? I live like 1/2 mile from there. They got something going on for Galants at that store? Cause that would be awesome.

Yup. Except it's more a Stratus GB that some of us G owners got in on. originally we were going to have different tips than the Stratus to accomodate a couple more inches of prjection - but the final product all have the same tip which is "adjustable". Mine's not due in till Monday, so I can't comment on the "adjustable" aspect - but ChicagoGTZ might be able to.

If you pop in the store, say "hi" to Josh who was our point man and took alot of crap from the GB members when we ran in to a Dynomax delay. Good guy.

    First the good news!!!!:

    Now the bad news:

I wish it ended there....this was a bitch to put on...I pretty much rebuilt the entire resonator pipe to fit...maybe it's my 00 GTZ Fed spec that did it, or maybe Dynomax are a bunch of idiots...if you dont know how to weld and cut steel well, dont do this!!! Here's my problems list...

    1) My Galant has a post-cat o2 sensor (acually, I think it's a temp sensor...whatever...not a big deal, I fixed that using the old o2 bung and drilled a hole in the pipe and welded everthing up. Worked great!!

    2) The resonator pipe is about 1 1/2 inches too long...well this is good since I had to do...

    3) The flange is the wrong size....and

    4) The flange is at the wrong clockwork rotation to match up with the cat flange....

    5) To top it all off, the hanger for the resonator pipe is on the wrong side...

So, my question is, how in the world is this a good fit for a galant? I spent almost 2 hours installing this, I had to break out the welder for more than I wanted to ever do, and it's still not 100% perfect. I love the sound it makes now, and it's all set. I need to align the tip to fit the opening (and add a larger tip) but it's finally done. BTW, someone is going to refund me some money for the hangers, flanges, and general malaise I went through to install this! Here is a pic...

I suggest you send it back unless it is a better fit for the i4 and cali spec vehicles....fucked if I know, but I'm done!!

Damn dude - bad that you went through all that but good to know it up front.

So you have a temp/O2 bung in the resonator section?

Also - do you have stock exhuast manifold or aftermarket headers?

I'm not ready to go through all that, so once mine comes in on Mon., I'm prechecking alignment, hangers, etc. - and if it's not near perfect, back it goes. Too bad, if it comes to that, but here's hopin' there's a huge dif between a V6 Fed and an I4 Cali...

No, I've got stock headers...but I do have a Fed Spec 00, so that could be the problem. The Cat to Resonator flange was rotated at about -60deg, the flange was also to small, I also had to retap new flange bolts onto the cat for a good tight fit.

I suspect since my V6 has 2.5 inch all the way though and maybe the strat has 2 inch exhaust??? Also, the hanger is on the wrong side, but that is easy. It took me about 2 hours to install, but I had it up on a lift.

Check for fit before taking the old one off...I didnt want to deal with the old flange bolts, so I just used a blow torch and cut the fucker off of my car...oops, there was no going back after that!!!

I'm gonna call DM on Monday and raise royal hell...oh ya, they forgot to include new bolts for the flange, so you'll need 3 bolts and 5 nuts (2 for the cat flange)

I suggest getting a new tip...something like this will be going on next week...

In regards to your tough install, you're right about the Fed spec being the problem. If you go to Club 3G and look through their posts about aftermarket cat backs you'll see that they run into this very same problem.

Yah - I was just looking at my exhaust - actually have th RIPP mid-pip off the car right now - and pics of the Dynomax here and on 2g stratus. From the pics, at least, let would appear to match up ok with my Cali Spec. O2 bung for Cali Specs is in the cat mid-pipe section - not the resonator section so that won't be an issue. Also looks like the 2-bolt flange on the resonator section would bolt right up. Two things that I can't see form pics are the resonator hanger and the lenght - if it will be too long like ChicagoGTZ posted. I'll know for sure Mon./Tue.

ChicagoGTZ - would you be able to take 2 pics and post? Looking for one of where the Dynomax bolts to your cat section and another of the resonator hanger... thanks.

    Blankman, heres some pics...

Here is where I cut it 1 1/2 inches shorter, added the correct flange, and added the o2 sensor...not that the flange is at an angle for the cat...the dynomax system flange was level...

If the cat-back is 1.5" too long for the Cali spec, it'd be a shame. I was thinking about getting one of these. It seems as though it would be almost as much work getting an Eclipse cat-back and adding some pipe after the rear axle.

I just confirmed via tracking mine was delivered this a.m. so I'll be able to see if Dave's problems on the Fed spec will also be on the Cali spec. I have my fingers crossed...

i just got my today too. gonna see how it is later.

Make sure you match it up before you do all the work...and dont be like me and use a blow torch to remove your old system....I dont think dynomax is gonna reimburse me for the problems I encountered...but I had to get the system on, due to destroying my old one in the removal. I really hope this fits your cars without any problems, but if it wont fit, call Jon and hell get you a refund.

Well, if your cat connection looks like this, you are gonna be OK (I think) Mine was much different, and I think the entire problem is that I own a Fed spec....this is a pic Blankman posted and the flange is at the correct angle and it looks smaller....so hopefully the res. pipe is the correct size and you will be set!!!

Update... just got home and checked the box from Advance. Complete system is there - less 3 bolts that everyone seems to be missing... - and test fitting to my already-removed RIPP mid-pipe and stock cat-pipe (pic above) shows the flange to be at the correct angle and holes line up nicely. Additionally, the hanger for the resonator pipe appears to be in the correct spot.

I don't think I'm going to get to install it tonight but will post install pics etc. when I do. No rush for me anyway, since I hadn't plan to have my G back together and on the road until this weekend.

If all goes well, as I expect it to, this means the 8g CALI-SPEC Galants (or Fed-spec with headers) will now have a DIRECT FIT, BOLT-ON CAT-BACK EXHAUST ready over-the-counter through Dynomax and Advance... pretty damn good deal, I think
