3 point, 4 point harness... need a roll cage or rear bar?

I like racing seat and I dont understand if you need a bar to conect harnesses to, or can you attach them to the actual seats? I saw a evo with the belts going like threw the seat holes al the way to the back of the car and i was like wow unpractical.. so any help?

real harnesses mount to the "back seat", or where a back seat would be on 2 seaters. since we're not going to be taking right hand turns going 120mph or flying down the highway doing 180mph, we can mount the harnesses to the back of the seat just fine, and they'll be solid.

for serious racing, they are supposed to be mounted to a roll cage. but for normal driving, they will still be functional just on the seat.

I'm acually working on building a harness bar to go along the back of the seats. It may add some chassis stiffening as well, but I plan to make it removable and just pipe pinned in place when I race. I'll post up pics when I have it completed....It will be holding 2 5-pt harnesses for Autocross events.

if you can pull serious turns goin 110, call up import tuner and you'll have more than enough money to make a 20 point harness if you want

if you crash your street car....
    while wearing a harness....

you can kiss your neck goodbye.

    like... good fucking bye.
    think dale earnhart

Your airbag.... will never touch your head.

I'm talking 30mph wreck and you are in rehab for months... or if you dont do rehab you can just live with chronic back and neck pain for the rest of your life.

    I'm serious too.

Of course the one sure thing that will be worse than your neck pain will be the head injury you sustain during the whiplash.

You should never ever ever ever ever ever wear a harness anywhere but at the track, where you aren't at risk of head-on collisions from other drivers, or hitting immovable objects head on is reduced to a very rare minimum due to strict controls.

So to answer your question, proper harness mounting is all about the angles. Most harness are mounted in the back seat because you get an appropriate angle as well as a solid mounting point.

If you had a roll cage you could mount them directly to a cross bar.
but again, a roll cage car on the street can kill you.

Yeah in an ideal world, you dont wanna wear a harness unless your wearing a Haans device or drag racing where a serious frontal collision is unlikely. Just like stunr said, you WILL severly hurt your neck or even die of a broken neck if you wear a harness on the street and rear end someone or any other type of moderate to major front end collision

but damn if they don't make you feel like you are a part of the car.

Sometimes I'm overwhelmed by how night and day my ability to control my car and interpret feedback is, with and without the harness.

Personal experience: with a 4 pt harness you'd be so stiff on the seat it's almost near impossible to reach down and grab a drink from the cup holder or change radio stations (even though I'm a big guy) and I can only imagine what would happen if a small fender bender can affect your neck/back. This is not an ideal safety device on a street driven vehicle and your factory seat belts is more than enough to keep you protected.

To sum up what everyone is saying...

Use a harness if you're going to be doing 110 on a track...

You WON'T be doing 110 on the street, or at least I hope for the sake of you and drivers around you that you don't, and in that case a harness is not practical.

    Harness on track = good
Doing 110 on public streets = bad

Therefore, harness on public streets = impractical

    Yeah?
