hmmm... my brakes heat up to fast and stop working

on a "spirited" drive today my brakes heated up and pretty much stopped working compleletly, its happened before but im sick of waiting for them to cool down. I have dimpled/slotted rotors and some non name brand ceramic pads from autozone. Will better pads grab longer

get better pads... sounds like your pads are overheating or at least getting so hot that their friction capacity is greatly decreased.

    Ahhh brake fade...

Basically this is how brakes work, they transfer lateral motion into heat. Through the laws of concervation of energy, this generates a shit load of heat.

Brake fade is basically thermal saturation...and your brakes have reached a critical temperature that will not increase without destroying the rotor and pads (likely). I suggest getting some cross drilled/slotted rotors and some good AXXIS pads. The pads will be better and the rotors will de-gas to keep the thermal property of the pads consistent (not cooler per se)

i know you said that the brand of pads you got wasn't a big brand name but what was the brand? i know i have my albany brake pads from autozone too and on regular city driving they're ok. but for them times when i go do the spirited driving, its like i don't have brakes at all. i'll be upgrading soon. right now im looking at satisfied's pro ceramic brake pad. im talking with another member who's gonna try them out so hopefully they are a good pad. if not, i might just go with a good axxis or hawk pad.

Okay. NEVER BUY BRAKE PADS FROM AUTOZONE UNLESS THEY ARE RAYBESTOS I used to work there and they sell some pos called ALBANY. Those should be thrown in the garbage. Go to PEPBOYS and get EBC Green stuff 'cause its good stuff.

    i really

i really dont remember what they were called. But i already have slotted/dimpled rotors and the pads work great but die out really quick when going fast

like i said, replace your pads w/ good ones. i have AKEBONO ceramics and POWERSLOT rotors at all 4 corners. they work very well and i haven't been able to make them fade yet (and i live in a very hilly area).

i WAS TOLD that when you get crossdrilled/slotted/dimpled whatever new rotors, then u should stick with metal pads, cuz the rotors will eat through the ceramic pads really quick.

I'm not sure if that is true, but I'm not a fan of ceramic anyway. Carbon metallic are the best in my opinion.

On slotted/dimpled/drilled rotors, if you have softer pads (most of the ceramic/asbestos blends) the rotors will eat away the pads pretty quickly as every time a slot/drilled part goes past the pad it will shave it a little. Also with the softer pads, you generally generate more heat/dust which maybe more than the rotors can wick away (during prolonged braking), so for a short time, the pad is riding on a cushion of hot dust (similar to heat saturation of the actual pad). To fight this, you'll notice that high end brake pads have a slot down the middle to help dissapate some of the dust, cheap pads or those not intended for "spirited use" usually don't.

The metallic or semi-metallic (carbon metallic) pads are better, but they tend to eat the rotor faster...its a trade off, you need to decide which is better for your driving 90% of the time

i bought mine rotors from raceconcepts... and brake pads. i need to change my pads and some one mentioned that if i use the oem ones the brakes wont squick.. make noise in the sense. is that true? what pads should be used with performance rotors?
