    V6: Single Turbo manifold question

Does anyone have any pictures or diagrams showing how a single turbo setup would be setup in a V6? Namely what I'm intrested in is how, and where the two manifolds meet (ie do they dump into a single tube right under the cross member???) All I can seem to find are pictures of the engine bay (with the turbo behind the drivers headlight), and nothing else.

    Thanks.

Someone on club3g.com is selling his turbo piping from his xtech kit:

Here are some pics of the current Donald Eley (formerly AAI) kit:

Thanks a lot man, that cleared it up quite a bit. Though im still a bit confused by AAI's kit. First off, how important are equal length manifolds? Its obvious that the rear manifold piping has a good 1-2 feet of piping over the front manifold. Wouldn't his adversly affect performance?

Have you checked out the book Maximum Boost: by Corky Bell? I've been going over it myself to try and understand what is going on - I'll check that book and see what it says about that.

I've heard of it, but I havnt gotten around to grabbing a copy yet. I suppose I might as well buy it now.

BTW Did you know that Corky himself help to make the Xtech kit. Thats probably why it worked so damn flawlessly.

I am far from an expert, but from what I gather, the Xtech kit and DE kit are pretty similar in that they both still use the stock cali spec manifolds, with collector tubes redirecting the exhaust to the turbo. Sure, may not be the ideal design of having the turbo directly on the manifold, but we do have two banks that need to be piped to the single turbo. Given the space restraints in our engine bay, that's probably about as good as you can get with these two kits.

Here's a pic of a turbo on a mustang engine - notice the longer piping from the other bank:

Ahhhh IC now. "collector tubes" thats the term I was looking for. The DE kit looks pretty damn nice, though its also pretty expensive.

I'm going to keep looking in this. BTW Do you by any chance know if its hard or expensive for a shop to custom make the collector tubes? Thats seems to be the key to going turbo for us (everything else seems relativly straight foward).

Not sure about the price for the custom tubing, but you can try getting a hold of Underated, who got his piping done at blacktrax ( http://www.blacktrax.net/project001newU.html ) - think it cost him about $1-2K. Shouldn't be too hard for a respectable shop.

BTW heres a pic of the hot side tubing for the DE kit:

Yeah, the DE kit is a bit pricey, but from what I have heard, the craftmanship is exceptional - the guys at RRE were really impressed so that's got to say something. Plus the only other "bolt-on" kit is the RIPP SDS which is about the same price range.

You can definitely save some cash by doing it yourself. Have you contacted horsepower house?

I'm really drawn to this kit. Much more so than RIPPs SDS. The install looks really straight foward, I wouldn't imagine that it can be harder than a tranny swap.

You know I havn't hit up horsepower house. I'm not sure I really see the reason too. Any truly custom built turbo from a shop will probably be much more expensive than a simple kit.

Actually I was thinking about horsepower house for the just the piping, since they might be closer to you than blacktrax which it up here in northern cali.

Have you checked out http://www.homemadeturbo.com ?

Has anyone seen this, I know it's a one time instance, but I dont like gettin screwed. AAI, and the other companies dont last long and are a little instable if you ask me. RIPP has always been straight forward and hasn't received alot of bad PR (other than those guys who blew up!!)

Yeah, lots of bad blood between Johnny of FIAS and Donny of AAI. If you go to the club3g.com forums you can see all the drama - personally I've only dealt with Donny, and he seems to be pretty good, but yeah, AAI is no longer a company, so thats why the kit is now referred to as the DE (Donald Eley) kit. From what I know, the delivery problems have been actually with the suppliers of the custom SMIC and the turbo itself (turbonetics, which is on a huge backorder).

FWIW, the poster of that ripoff report has not proven to be a saint either in terms of customer support.

If you are interested in the kit, your best bet is to deal with either of his two distributors, who so far have been excellent with their communication.

Its unfortunate though, that Galant/Eclipse/Stratus owners have been getting the shaft in terms of aftermarket parts and service.

Well, johnny wasn't the only distributor for Max Rev - you can contact them directly at http://www.maxrev.com. Supposedly they are wanting to develop a V6 kit, but need a tester up in the Oregon area.

I do believe that Donny is still making his I4 kit. To get a hold of either of Donny's kits go to either:
