Conversion (Tranny) Ken Inn / Manybrews / anyone advice???

    Greetings Fellow Galant owners,

I have had quite a few problems with my Automatic Transmission lately.

I wont go into too much detail but I got screwed by the repairer.

Now the car appears to be fixed.....

But I cant trust the transmission!!! I cant take her on long drives (500 kilometers one way) cause I cant trust the repairs.

So I have dreamed of having a manual tranny put in for some time now.

I have owned the car for 6 years now and she has served me very well in that time.

The car has the 4g63 N/T engine and I was hoping for any pointers in what needs to be done in the swap.

    I'll need

    Clutch Pedal
    Brake Pedal
    Clutch Hydrolics (sp)
    Gearstick
    Gearstick under body selecter
    Manual Gearbox
    Clutch Assembly

Is there anything "electrical" I need to concern myself with??

I know the Automatic Tranny is very "managed" by electronics.

Can you point out any areas of concern that I should be aware of.

The Engine has 240,000 kilometers on the clock and a rebuild is on the cards. (As she is blowing some smoke)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can dispence.

    Will

    1g tranny swap: http://www.ecanfix.com/~mdhamilton/autotomanual.html
    7G tranny swap: https://www.thegalantcenter.org/viewt...pic.php?t=36340

with the 7G, the only two pieces of electronics associated with the transmission are the speed sensor (not really electronic) and the reverse light switch.

    Cheers Peanotation !

Thanks for the links to the 7G and 1G tranny swap guides.

It has given me a much greater understanding of whats involved.

The 7G Guide is particularily excellent.

Very enthusastiac to get started on the swap now.

Just got to earn some extra cash.

Thanks and I would be interested to hear if anyone has any experiance in a 6G specific swap.

register at http://www.mogwa.org/forum/phpBB2/ and pm Mitsiman, he owns and runs RPW in perth, only place to go with a Mitsi engine basically! for more info on the company go to www.rpw.com.au

i've got an 89 SE and will hopefully b looking at swapping the engine for a vr4 engine with the turbo and intercooler. looks like being about 4k. might b an idea for u, if he can recommend someone near u, to do the tranny with the whole swap, because with the front cut u'd get all of that stuff i would think...

    Cheers Spackbace.

I have a mechanic lined up to assist with the swap (Tranny).
He works for CASH *cough* and Booze.
    So its all sweet.
I am pretty sure you cant get Pedals and Shifter with a front cut.
Still they arent too hard to source.
The Jury is still out on what to do with the engine.
I'm honestly not too interested in turbo.
I'm 28 and a little over that aspect of life.
I may just get my engine reconditioned for about $3000.00 AUD.
Fortunatly there are plenty of places in Brisbane and the Gold Coast that do front cut and import motors / gearboxes.
    Thanks for the reply,

    Will

I have got the workshop manual in PDF format - but no you cant ask me to email it to you. its about 100mb

I saw 2 front cuts at a joint in Burleigh Heads last year, plus more bumpers from ones they had broken up. So they might have stacks of what you need.

I lost the URL for their website, but i think this is them
    http://www.japparts.com.au/
    they have some in stock

    VR4 Gearboxes

Hey guys thanks for the input.

I'm debating about buying a front cut and doing most of the work myself.

A question I have is for the vr4 owners about thier manual tranny's.

Obviously the cars are 4 wheel drive and have a Dif at the front to change the rotation on the driveshaft to allow the "drive power" to be sent to the back of the car to be changed again to allow the back wheels to drive.

Is the front dif part of the tranny ?

    Or are they seperate parts.

I have a front wheel drive GSR and dont want to get a front cut to find the VR4 (4 wheel drive) tranny wont fit.

Hope that makes sense to everyone.

    Will
