    buying a floorjack...

i was wondering if the no name brand floor jacks on ebay can be trusted.

    for example: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-TON-Floor-Jack-A...1QQcmdZViewItem

the product claims 2 ton limit but last thing i want is to be under my car torqueing something, when some no name brand jack stand gives way and crushes me. or i have my back wheels off, only to have the floor jack give out and drop my suspension on the floor....

    jack

I think for that price + shipping, I prefer to go to look for a Craftsman or go to Autozone or Pepboys, or something like that, always have some kits in that range, and you can have some peace of mind, Always use the stands, be safe!

if you want something that is going to be reliable, i would get the ones with the wider/stronger design. something like this 3 ton floorjack:

i bought some 2 ton jack stands at walmart for 8 bucks and they look a whole lot more sturdy than that one.

click click this is the jack that i have. i got it on sale for 50 bucks with 2 free jack stands. i like it.

2 things you should also look for when buying a jack. the minimum height and the maximum height.

right now, im shopping for a racing jack like this one because since my car is lowered, and i might want to go lower, i got to have a jack that will actually fit under the car.

and with the max height, one time we were trying to take the wheels off of my friends car to get his winter wheels on and low and behold with the jackign point we were using his POS jack like the one you posted, wouldn't lift the car high enough to get the wheels off the ground. so thats another thing to look out for.

Costco has good aluminum racing jacks once and a while, 3 1/2 ton, 3 pull to raise, and they usually go for 159.99, but are amazing quality, even better than Craftsman, and are lifetime guranteed.

Definitely get the sturdier style like peano posted. I have a cheap "umpty-ton" jack similar to that eBay one and it's junk. The valving wears out rather quickly, the extension isn't very good and it takes twice as many pumps to reach a given height. They would be ok for a "travel" jack at an AutoX, but not for a garage.

well i just bought a craftsman 2 1/4 ton floorjack and guess what? my car is too low for the jack to roll under. i guess anyone who plans on buying a floorjack and is lowered more than 1.7 inches needs to buy a racing jack.

I have this problem too, whatcha gotta do is buy some wood like 2x4s I believe is the size and drive up on them to get the body of the car higher up and then roll the jack underneath. The place that I get my tires from had to do the same thing for my car and others that were there and I learned it that way

I've seen folks get clearance for their jacks this way too. Also if you don't want to carry around 2x4's in your trunk I've seen people use telephone books too. But the latest item I've seen was at Pep Boys, and was a set of metal "mini ramps" that you put in front of your wheels of your lowered car, so you can gain enough clearence to jack up you car. I'll see if I can find a picture of one on the net to post.

where are you jacking from? my floor jack doesn't fit from the side jacking points but from the front and rear jacking points they fit just right.

yea, i jack from the side cuz thats what the manual said. not too sure where the front and back jacking points are. afraid i might damage the suspension if i jack from the wrong point

I bought an aluminum low profile "racing" floorjack that supports 2 1/2 tons from pep-boys a while ago. It fits under both the front, rear and side jackpoints. I'm lowered on eibach springs, and old shocks...lol.
    It only cost $55

I got the $30 one at AutoZone. It started to leak or not building up pressure after about a year. So I went and bought another one haha

this is where I jacked my car up yesterday to switch my wheels

I used the motor mount in the front, and I am not sure what the piece is called in the rear that I placed the jack under
