Diode trick? You mean on the 8G, the lows turn off when you use your brights? My 7G doesn't do that. My lows stay on when I have the brights on.

on the usdm 8g's there is only a single bulb for high and low so the car shuts down the lows when the highs are on.

I used 2 relays, and I did it for Jd's also.

you guys used relays or diodes? the 12v diodes i wired up dont seem to be working. i'll look into using relays. how did you wire them up Roman?

I'll post a simple diagram later on tonight

are you sure you have the diodes facing the correct way?

now that i think of things. scratch that. without looking at reelax's tutorial, how do you have the diode wired up. it might be wired up wrong.

i have the diode soldered onto some wire tips, spliced the wires into the hi/lo positives. pretty sure i got them facing the right way. but the lows still go off when i hit the high.

i figure if i had them on backward, that the highs would be on when i have the lows on? or not right? not enough wattage?

and thanks for the link Roman

yea. thats why i said to scratch that idea. uhm, check to see if the diode is still good. if its bad, current won't run through it no matter which way it faces. you have the specs for the diode?

this is what Radio Shack had.

    Zerner Diode
    INT4742A

    voltage: 12.0v
    current: 21ma
    max power dissipation: 1.0w

i think you blew out the diode. you need a bigger diode. when buying a diode they usually list the peak inverse voltage. thats the max voltage that a diode can hold in the reverse direction wihtout breaking down. you need to get a diode with a higher peak inverse voltage thats higher than the voltage being applied to your headlights.

This is good enough to hold an LED, go the relay way.

I bought these same diodes from Radio Shack and it burned out. You should get an "automotive" type 12v diode. Right now I'm not using the diode trick anymore (got tired of it), I now switch between high and low beams. But I can still make both high and low beams turn on by just pulling back the high beam switch just enough but not "toggling/switching" the high beam...good for those times when approaching vehicles have high beams that blind you.
