    broke timing belts

i own a 95 galant s and within a couple of days apart my timing belt had completely snapped while driving. once coming home from work and then again after replacing it days later while flooring it. what could cause it to snap apart like that.

Old age. How many miles are on the belt? Its recommended to change Mitsu timing belts every 60k miles. Was the balance shaft belt still intact?

I guess he means that it snapped once and then again after the replacement. I say that you should take it back to where you had it done and have them redo the work because they f*cked up your shit.

    are 7g's valve benders?

im wondering b/c i locked up my balance shaft and broke a crank barring and bent the connecting rod when the piston slammed into the head.. and i want to reuse the head.. im going to build this 'extra' head if its not too damaged..

Yes 7g motors as will most if not all Mitsu motors, are "valve bending" motors . If it snapped within days of installing it, it was not installed correctly. More then likely over tightened. But still would be hard to snap a belt by overtightening. If you locked up the BS, did the belt snap and cause the timing belt to snap? Your head is more then likely screwed.

like Seth said, your valves are shot too. It is the envitable.
And only sure way of telling if they are bent is to take the head off, not just the valve cover.

Not how fast your car goes but how good u drive going fast.

    its easy to tell,
look at the pistons. are there dents in the piston from the valves?
    i'm sure there are.
also, just turn the can gear a couple of times and the bent one's will become apparent.
if you get a cheapy valvespring compressor od pop off the valvelocks, you can pull the valves out and stand them up on end.
then hold a square to them and check

if the head is off the car, its easy to remove the valves. Heres one of my valves after my timing belt SLIPPED, did not break:

The ends of the valves are not what bends, its the rods that attach to them.
