    Proper Tire/Wheel Sizing: 1987-2011 Galants. **UPDATED 10/18/2011**

    I am not responsible for improper fitment of wheels, lugs, hub rings, or anything else related to this information. This is nothing more than a easier reference for people who have that want to upsize there wheels and tires. Each tire should be checked for proper load carrying ability, and kept at the vehicle recommend pressure whenever possible.

    NOTE: The tire size that may best fit your car may or may not effectively fit your wheel you selected. Be sure to ask for specific fitment or best recommended fitment from your local tire experts before purchasing or attempting to install your tires and wheels.

    Just thought I'd give you all a little FAQ or a post to have a listing of the proper tire sizes for each generation Galant.

    First of all here is a general idea of what the numbers mean, we will break it down using a sample size.

    185/70-14.

    The '185' is the width of the tire in millimeters (7.28 inches).

    The '70' is the profile. In this case the tire is 70% as tall as it is wide, or in other words, 129.5 millimeters (5.1 inches).

    The '14' is the wheel diameter, in inches.

    So for our example the overall height is 24.2" tall.

    There is a method to figuring that out, but I'll just make it easy and include overall diameters.

    Wheel Backspacing and Offset

    Before mounting a set of aftermarket wheels, there are some dynamics involved with fitment that are best to understand first.

    1. Wheel Diameter. This is the diameter of the wheel. Stock wheels are commonly 15 or 16 inch diameter. This dimension is usually in 1 increments (i.e. 15, 16, 17) but some manufacturers offer 16.5, which is rare.

    2. Wheel Width. This is the width of the wheel, measured inside the outer lip of the wheel. This dimension is usually in 1/2 increments (i.e. 7.5, 8)

    3. Wheel Center. This is the center of the wheel in relation to the width.

    4. Offset. The distance from the centerline of the wheel to the face of the mounting surface of the wheel that contacts the hub.

    4.1 Zero Offset. Indicates the mounting surface is at the wheel center.

    4.2. Negative Offset. Indicates the mounting surface is behind (or inboard) the centerline of the rim. This is often found on standard rear-wheel-drive vehicles and on so-called reversed rims. (Diagram below shows negative offset)

    4.3 Positive Offset. Indicates the mounting surface is in front of (or outboard) the centerline of the rim. This is often found on front-wheel-drive vehicles. Stock Tacoma wheels have Positive offset.

    5. Backspacing. The distance from the mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel. This measurement is closely related to offset (without actually measuring, backspacing is about equal to [Wheel Width / 2] + [Offset] + [about 1/4] ).

    6. Centerbore. The centerbore of a wheel is the size of the machined hole on the back of the wheel that centers the wheel properly on the hub of the car. This hole is machined to exactly match the hub so the wheels are precisely positioned, minimizing the chance of a vibration. This measurement may be critical to clear the hubs of a 4WD.

    7. Bolt Circle. Also known as PCD (Pattern Circle Diameter). The bolt circle represents the diameter of an imaginary circle that goes through the center of the bolt holes. 4x2 Tacoma Bolt Circle: 5 lug on 4.5 PCD; 4x4/Prerunner Tacoma Bolt Circle: 6 lug on 5.5 PCD.

    The bolt patterns for the Galant is as follows:

    2004 - Current (9th Generation): 5x114.3mm (5x4.5")

    1999 - 2003 (8th Generation): 5x114.3mm (5x4.5")

    1994 - 1998 (7th Generation): 4x114.3mm (4x4.5")

    1988 - 1993 (6th Generation): 4x114.3mm (4x4.5")

    **Do NOT under any circumstance attempt to fit any other bolt patterns.

    The following bolt patterns DO NOT fit the Mitsubishi Galant of any year.

    4x100
    4x108
    4x130
    5x100
    5x108
    5x110
    5x112
    5x120
    5x130

    Also any 6 or 8 lug pattern.

    The best and most common wheel widths used are as follows:

    Common Original Equipment sizes (OE):

    All OE wheels have roughly a +45mm to +51mm offset

    15x6"
    16x6.5"
    17x6.5"

    Aftermarket wheels range widely in width, anything from 3" wide to 18" wide. Most extreme fitments are NOT designed for this vehicle (or most cars for that matter) so if you don't see it listed here it probably doesn't fit. Most aftermarket wheels that fit without modification will range in offset from +35mm to +48mm. Please when shopping for wheels use the completeness of this entire guide and all your fitment questions should be covered.

    If you plan on extreme fitments or do not see something listed then ask away or please PM me and I can help with any questions.

    6G and 7G ONLY: These will NOT fit the 8G or 9G, no caliper clearance.

    Mind you this is rounding down from the fractional millimeters. Wheel companies don't really use fractional millimeters when setting offsets.

    Here is 20x9.5 +37mm:




    Here is a 19x10 +25 wrapped in a 235/35R19:



    So, with similar camber, you could comfortably run this:

    19x9 +35mm
    19x9.5 +30mm

    So, if anything, you will be nicely flush, no poke. it won't look odd at all, and really, would look nicely aggressive.
