1996 Eagle Summit 4G64 5 speed AWD - gonna turbo it!!

Hello everyone, my summit has a 4G64 with a distributor just like the 7g Galant. My plan is turbo it for cheap but I have some questions I was hoping you guys could help me out. Here are some pictures.

My plan is to keep it as simple as possible. I want to keep the stock ECU and distributor at first and upgrade later. I plan to treat this like you would a 75 shot of N20. Retard base timing 2 degrees with the distributor and run cooler plugs since the stock ECU doesn't monitor knock.

14b with ported manifold and o2 housing (hope to find a rebuilt one with 34mm flapper)
    2g downpipe
    SAFC II
DSM sidemount and custom IC piping
    2.5" exhaust
    thinner fans
    rewire stock fuel pump
390 or 450cc DSM injectors and resistor

i think that is about as low buck as you can get with an IC. please add your suggestions. I don't know what fan's to get that will be thinner so I need to figure that out.

    ignition

Please look at those engine bay pics and let me know if you see any differences between mine and a 7g galant.

Does the ignition look the same? I was looking at a 7g turbo tutorial and his ignition looked different.

Im sure there are some small differences. Distributor looks a bit different, air box is different, but the MAS is the same which is hte same as the 2g turbo MAS. I dont forsee any problems with the ignition, just get some nice plugs and plug wires.

Yeah i recently had the entire distributor assembly out, and I can say that the appearance of all the wires and the location relative to the block is the same.

    is that a 6 bolt?

it should be very very easy to mod that thing.

just noticed its manual. aside from making power, you could get better feel out of your shifter(and less missed shifts) by replacing your shift cable bushings with skateboard ball bearings. and getting some poly baseplate bushings for your stock shifter. could be done for about 20 bucks

Where are you gonna fit a turbo in that engine bay?

if the a/c fan interferes i'd just take it out.
also, if you want to get better airflow to your radiator for cooling,
i'd modify that front grill and take a few cross bars out of it.
then you will get plenty of airflow to not need the extra fan.

    would look more aggressive too.

man that expo doesn't look like much. how much does it weigh? seems like a 2.4 is a bit much for that. i bet its already pretty quick.

also throw your battery in your trunk. and get a throttle cable from a expo w/o cruise control. then you can eliminate the cruise control and the mess of wires, cables, and boxes under the hood. takes about 30 minutes to swap out.

wouldn't hurt to go ahead and pressure wash the hell out of that engine bay

Its AWD so the 2.4L is probably not quite enough for its drivetrain. Looks hot though. AMS did an Evo swap in....something I cant remember, but its the bigger Mitsu SUV/sport utility crapper.

yeah this thing could be badass. I agree though...not much room in that engine bay...that looks like the major difference between that and the G.

pffft. the 6g galant gsx was awd and 2.0 so i'm sure it has some pull to it. and look how small that thing is. i bet w/o the awd it weighs less than the mirage/summit.

i think they dropped their 2.3 into the outlander.
It was such a sick setup.

    questions and answers

The shifter is a rather long throw but I'm sure it would benefit from reshimming and bushings.

I'm gonna tune it up and change all the fluids and then start putting the kit together. Right now I have a CEL for code P1400 "DPFE EGR circuit low input". Never heard that one before and noone makes a summit or expo repair manual so any tips would be appreciated.

The fans are a big concern. I might try a flexible radiator hose and see how the works. If that doesn't give me enough room for things, then I'll buy a set of the aftermarket fans that are much thinner and see how that works.

FYI, curb weight is listed at 3064 for the automatic. You can remove the rear seat and I bet it weighs at least 50lbs. The spare tire and stock exhaust are heavy too. I don't think it would take much to get it under 2800lbs and still look totally stock. It is tuned slightly different than a 7g and it's rated at 136hp and 145tq. You can tow with it as well.

Does anyone know how to identify injectors? I'm wondering if it got larger injector for any reason.

your passengert side fan should present no clearance issues. it would only be the drivers side one.
you can always get a pusher fan and put it on the front of the radiator. that would make lots of room, as well as make it easier to work on the beast(more clearance for tools and hands)
first thing i take off when i work on the turbo is the radiator fans or i just yank the whole radiator.

You should weld up a cage in that thing. it woudl be so easy
