^^Could you explain what you just said. What is negative TDC? I thought the 1G head was the same as the GS? What about changing the gears? I must have missed something.

I just got back from the yard pulled a 1G head and intake for $57, one of the exhaust valve chipped but it was a hell of a deal. Now I read this and was like WTF.

well, the 2.0L engine has 88 mm crank stroke and the 2.4L has 100mm crank stroke. To compensate the extra 12mm they came up with the different cam gears timing which is like 1/2 a tooth different from 2.0L cam gears. Other than that the 4g64 DOHC head and 4g63 DOHC head are the same. JNZ tuning has them for 25 bucks each, so no biggie
God created turbo lag to give the v8's a brief moment of hope.

Thanks mko, I thinking I had to hunt down GS gears.

has nothing to do with the stroke.
the 4g64 has a taller deck height.
so to accomidate the cams being further from the crank.... there has to be a longer timing belt.
the DOHC64 cam gears are the same size, and have the exact same number of teeth as the dohc63 gears,
the only difference is the orientation of the timing marks.

I read it here long ago John, just found the link again. maybe I didnt make it clear enough, but he understood that he needed 4g64 DOHC cam gearz

stroke has nothing to do with it. i can put a 4g64 crank in a 4g63..... for a 2.3l, and still use the 4g63 cam gears.
inversely i can put a 4g63 crank in a 4g64 block for a 2.1l and i'd still have to use the 4g64 dohc gears.
Its all about the distance between the cams and the crank.

I dont know if this is going to work. I went to the junkyard today and got the distributer from a Mirage. I am trying to envision the machine work that would have to be done. I stood them side by side. What does everyone think? I have access to plenty of excellent machine shops. My concern is the o-ring. I don't think I can machine past the o-ring.

Ok, I ordered my GS gears and I plan on using a GS ECU cause I can get one for a good price. My question is which ARP head bolts do I get the one for my 4G64 7 bolt block or 6 bolt block or does it matter or can I reuse the old head bolts.

7Gs and 2Gs are all 7bolt blocks in stock form. I'd grab some new head bolts since the old ones are likely to be out of spec if reused. Up to you to decide whether you use OEM mitsu's or ARP. I'm using new OEM's currently since I'm certain I won't be pushing beyond that threshold just yet.

    well here is the deal.
You CANNOT re-use the oem 7bolt studs. they are stretch-to-torque bolts.

so if you use oem headstuds. plan on buying new ones.
    The way i see it.....
if you are already buying studs(and you have to) why not buy some ARP

Head bolts and head studs are the same thing right, I'm not stupid but some sites are sell studs then they bolts pictured as the item. I was getting confused, but I ordered OEM bolts.

As for a head gasket again stock or metal, I know it would be better if I had ARP bolts and metal head gasket but I'm stay in a budget of $200-$300 for the head swap.

    And I want a Wii.

They perform the same task but studs tend to seal better at much performance levels. Likewise can be said between an OEM head gasket and a metal head gasket (in some cases). I'd look at reviews on head gaskets.

As for staying below $300 altogether? Ehhhh...lol??? I just pulled up a receipt from JNZ Tuning for some misc parts.

BTW, that manifold stay isn't REALLY needed....and is a pain to install/remove. Unless you can get a lot of this used...you'll be breaking that amount easily.

i agree 300 is tough 2 stay below.. i know a lot of ppl and a lot of places and i get a great deal but when im done its gonna be about 400 easy for the swap.. and all these misc parts are worth getting knew.. like me i can wait and make sure i have everyting ready before i do this.. new lifters, valves seals, guides, everything.. do it the easy way but do it right.. as 4 me im doing it the hard way lol

I got a set of new 7 Bolt Head Bolts and I'm using stock a head gasket. I just ordered a new valve and I'll prolly order the camshaft gears next week. Now I'm just waiting for it to warm up.

Has anyone heard of this, over at the Mirage Performance I have build thread and some of the members were talking about the compression increase of the head swap and guy said he used two OEM head gaskets to increase the combustion camber and in result the compression is decreased. The guy said he this on his 4G64 swapped DSM, don't know how true it is but what do you guys think?

Using a thicker head gasket is not uncommon for lowering compression. I dunno about using multiple OEM composites to do this though, doesn't seem too safe.

which oem head gasket did he use? and i dont think its safe but compression will go up as the sohc stock is 9.5:1 and the dohc is 10.0:1.. if nething since u dont plan on going turbo yet you can leave it and then if u go turbo buy new pistons 2 drop the compression.. im going to 9.0 compression

i mean sohc or dohc gasket

id hope so lol and the compression will be raised which is good while n/a then if u go turbo u can change the pistons and solve that issue
