you got to understand how long the throw is from going from park to reverse. its so long! you odn't want to mis shift and go straight into neutral. you might just end up just sitting there.

I highly doubt there is a "short" shifter for a A/T car. The lever in a A/T shifter control assembly is usually built into one complete piece. Plus there is no need to have a "short throw" in a A/T. If you do what the shorten the height of the shifter...MAYBE you can get a different shift knob handle to which Levoc makes some.

Yes..you can shift from drive to neutral w/o pressing the button. Its only neccessary pressing the button getting out of park and putting into park.

    most autos work this way:

you have to press the button to go from P to R.
you do NOT have to press the button to go from R to N.
you do NOT have to press the button to go from N to D.
you have to press the button to go from D to 3
you have to press the button to go from 3 to 2
you have to press the button to go from 2 to L
You do NOT have to press the button from L to 2
You do NOT have to press the button from 2 to 3
You do NOT have to press the button from 3 to D
You do NOT have to press the button from D to N

so you only have to press the button to get out of park to reverse... then when u are ready, you can just pull down straight to drive without pushing the button (must b on the brake). also if you are dropped down into first you can go straight to neutral without pushing the button (L->2->3->D->N).

it's just the way the shift release button works. i could have written them out of order but that would be more confusing to some people.
