How do I pull CEL codes on a 94 Galant?

I've searched all over for it. I'm assuming it's OBD1 since it's a 94 but the connector is different from the 1g DSM's that I am used to. The car runs perfect so it's probably something minor or emissions related but I'd still like to know what is causing it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

94-95 have obd1 computers but have the obd2 connector and you need to either short it to get the codes or go to the dealership

How do I short it? Which pins do I use? Will the CEL blink or can I use a volt meter and count the sweeps?

Wow, this sucks. I found this site online but it doesn't seem to be much help.

    OK,

locate the plug socket, using a jumper wire, ground terminal pin#1(located in upper left corner).
After bout 3 seconds the CEL will start flashing out the codes.
First it will flash in the tens place. then it will flash the units place, For example.....

the cell will light for 1.5 seconds, then will go off for .5 seconds, then will light again for another 1.5 seconds.

If you know how to read the flashes and the pauses then you are good and I need not write anymore. If not then PM me for a copy of the instructions.

ALSO, there is a post with the codes listed somewhere on the forum if anyone wants to search for it.

any wire that will not burn out should be good. Like a test light wire or something.

I took a small paper clip and straightened it out and stuck it in pin # 1, then I took a short jumper wire that I fabbed up a while back and you clip one end to the paper clip and I just grounded it to a bolt head by the pedals. Anything metal that screws into the chassis will work fine. For the jumper wire I just took a short length of wire (about 2') and soldered a small aligator clip on each end.

The link I posted above will show you how to count the blinks and it also has a place where you can punch in your code and it'll tell you what the problem was. For instance mine was a 43 which was the EGR valve. Probably just needs cleaning out or something since the engine has 155k on it.

would speaker wire or telephone wire work as those are the only types of wire i have around at the moment

Any wire will work. 89Mirageman's suggestion to straighten a paperclip and attach a wire to it works geat.

The following copied from "Car Problems? 7th Gen Only" topic "electrical problem/On Board Diagnstics (OBD) plug problem"

This the OBD2 plug with a few of the position indicated. Our 94 and 95 cars are equipped with this 16 pin OBD2 style connector but have OBD1 type diagnostics which means you can't use an OBD2 code reader to read the error codes. Instead on our 94 & 95 models you ground out position #1 and count how many times the Check Engine Light (CEL) flashes to determine why your CEL is on. (Haynes manual chapter 6, page 6-5 for details),

    pin 16 +12v power
    pin 5 ground
pin 9 8192 baud serial data
Pin 1 ground out to determine error codes on 94 & 95's

I've found this in my efforts to find out what a code 11 is (O2 sensor) on my 95.

I hope this helps anyone out there looking for codes for our cars. If it's not a help, a mod or I can delete it.
