02 Galant 2.4 sohc Sputters at take off.

I am new to this site. I have an '02 Galant 2.4 SOHC with 62500mls. It is killing me. The heat went out- I put a thermst. in and not it is sputtering and low rpms at take off. I start it up- let it run- put it in drive- and it might take right off or it might sputter and then take off...? Still under warranty and the Dealer couldn't find anything. They changed the spark plugs, tested the fuel rail pressure and wanted to fix others stuff. Took it to another shop and they didn't find anything either. No light on to indicate a trouble code. What should I do?
    :x :?:

Did they replace the coil packs when they replaced the plugs? you have two of each, plugs and coil packs. Sounds like one might be failing. Have you checked the throttle body to see if it's clean? That's the first two things that come to my mind.

Thanks, you would think the dealer would have changed that as well, but I will replace those to start with.

it could also be a malfunction of something electrical such as the mas try unplugging it and resetting the ecu by unplugging the negative terminal for about 2hrs maybee it is somthing that could be corrected by itself, i would also check your intake manifold there have been some problems with that also....as well as your timing belt i would suggest to change that around now as well

those are expensive to start with, i'd check out the other things mentioned in the replies before running out and buying new coil packs. from what i've been told those don't need replacement ever, unless they break.

I had sumthin' similar when I 1st got mine (at about 80K miles)... 2000 4cyl ES

The intake pipe, that comes from the filter to the throttle body has a "box" attached to it (just holds extra air, for hard/sudden acceleration). There's a name for it, but I can't remember right now...

Anyways, on mine, that big piece was breaking off of the pipe. It had a crack... I used high-temp tape and wrapped the crack up, but eventually it broke to the point where the tape wasn't helping. I cut out a round-shaped piece of automotive plastic and covered the hole (using some sealant and tape to reinforce). No problems since...

Other than that, I'd check to make sure that there is no oil/fluid in the plug well. I recently had to change my valve cover and plug well gaskets (~$26 from Autozone) 'cause oil was leaking in, causing the sputtering.

Evene tho they did some work, you should probably take a look to see that it was actually done. Also, take the car to Autozone and have 'em check for codes (they do it for free). Some codes don't make the check engine light come on.

Does it just happen @ take off or @ any time when you floor the gas?

what heat you talkin about?? ya mean the no heat coming from the blower??? iwonder if our cars have heater radiators like the ones vws have..

is it only blowing cold air from the vents when you turn the hot/cold knob back and forth?

if so then the plastic piece that the knob turns has come off the piece that actually turns the blower from hot to cold. you can check it out its by the gas pedal. if it has, just turn the little circle knob by hand until its hot. they plastic pieces are pretty cheap and break easily over time

I had the problem like a week ago when I floored the car to get into traffic. and I had the problem yesterday when I accelerated kinda hard from a cold start. I have like 97,000 miles on my car. Never tuned it up yet, I'm guessing its just the car way of letting me know its time for a tune up.... what do you guys think????

Yeah... with mileage like that you shouldn't be flooring it right when you start it up... Especially if it's a lil chilly out... Go for the tune up at a Mitsu dealer.. It's not that expensive.. As long as there's nothing wrong with the car... What kind of gas are you putting into it?

I just started to have the same thing happen... Stumbling from a start. Looks like it chills out a little, once the car is warmed up. Still sputters from a stop tho. I am gonna change the plugs and run some carb cleaner thru the throttle body this evening to see what's up.

FYI...if it was a coilpack, there would be a SES light and the code would tell you which one is messed up. I ended up replacing the boot on one of mine (search for my post), if you think you have a coilpack issue. Instead of alot of $$$$ for a replacement coilpack, mine turned out to be an Fed up boot (~$18).

Put some Bosch platinums in there and runs like new. Didn't have to mess with the throttle body at all. Took about 15 minutes.

Couple days later and it's starting to sputter again. Thinking it may be the plug boots and wires. Car's got ~170K miles, so it may be time to replace 'em. Dealer want ~$67 for the 2 wires to two of the plugs and ~$17 each for the two boots.

Gonna take my chances off of Ebay...less than $40 for everything.

Bosch is not the brand to put in our cars. Try just a regualr set of NGK plugs & wires. Also make sure that the plugs are gapped correctly.

Do they just foul out, or what? Ran great for a few days and I can only think that the wires may need replacing (after 170K miles).

Replaced the wires up top (not the coil boots/insulators) and no NGKs, so I grabbed a set of Autolite Platinums.

Ran okay for a bit, then I got the SES light and found a misfire in #2 cyl. I am sure it's the plug/coil boot. Ordered a set from Autozone (~$19), but they haven't come in yet.

I messed with the boot again and it's doing better, but I am sure that replacing 'em will be the solution.

So... if anyone's sputtering or has loss of power at take off, change the plugs 1st, then replace the wires/coil boots.... especially if they already have ~170K miles on 'em

I had this problem for a while, and Now Its all gone. It was something that I really didn't think of. After replacing the plus, wires, coil packs, and making sure the fuel was not clog and all that other stuff. I ended up Replacing the BANK 1 Cat Converter. Please be aware that when you by the Bank 1 Cat, it is apart of the exaust Manafold. And it is a dealer Item, unless you are trying to get aftermarket performance exaust. The price varies by dealerships. But I broght it in Houston and after I put it on, it ran like a brand new car. It didn't know how to stay off the triple digits of the speedo. But you might want to look into that. And for the dealer to have alot of them in stock tells me something.
