Stunr: New engine management installed!! w/ vids

    Hey guys,
i don't usually fill anyone in (cept a select few i spose) when i have an up and coming modification.
typically you guys hear about it after its installed with me typing a few breif lines about it ad posting a few pics.

This time i'm going to let you know ahead of time my intentions, this will help involve you on my projects, and perhaps help me to keep from putting them off for soooo long.

Saturday i'm installing my Speed density converion. For those of you who don't know, speed density is a digital method of calculating airflow.

instead of actually measuring the air coming into the engine( with your mas) this setup takes the fixed volume of the engine(displacement) and using density and temperature, you can calculate how much air is in the engine per rev.

the upside: no more mas. you can honestly run the car with nothing but a throttle body, and it will operate flawlessly. yep, i can strap a piece of screen over my throttle and drive to florida and back with great mileage.
also since everything is calculated based on manifold pressure, you can vent the bov properly with no ill effects, also boost leaks no longer throw off the tune.
of course with no mas, you get better throttle response, quicker spool(and louder spool you ricer)

    the downside: volumetric efficiency.
simple mods can throw off the tune, cams, a new air filter, headers, etc..... they all effect how efficient the engine is at pullin in air at different rpms, so it means more tuning,

the fuel system i am running is fully adjustable,
timing, soft and hard v.e., fuel enrichment, injector size, launch rpm, rev limiter etc etc.
all within the stock ecu and completely run on wideband o2 inputs(open loop and closed)

aside from all the tech babble,

this is going to be something no other 7g has done, and only a handful of dsm guys have tried.

I'll be expecting around 32-36 mpg on the highway with the lean burn code,
and be running as much as 25 psi every single day.

so basically i just had a GM intake air temp sensor welded into my upper charge pipe today, and i have already plumbed my gm 3 bar map sensor.

 so saturday morning when i run the wire from my wideband to the ecu, i will install my ostrich eprom emulator and flash the ecu to run full on speed density,
i'll then load a basemap(to get running) then take it to the streets and start w/ the tuning. :!:

i'll try to keep you guys updated,
and count on seeing one less ugly instrument in my engine bay shots from now on

Good luck with the conversion. I'm glad to see someone pushing the envelope and hopefully one day will be able to join the ranks myself.

This is something I'd like to get into myself one day. 3 questions:

-How much time is devoted to preparation and learning this.
-How much time will it take to install and tune (roughly)
    -$$?

well it took me 5 years with this car to get where i'm at.
so i'd say about 5 years of careful planning, trial and error, writing checks, and busting knuckles.

    money?
well its open source code, all you need is the sensors(bout 100 total), the ostrich(eprom emulator) 175$, a wideband(reccomended), and a pc(prefferably a laptop so you cna make changes on the fly in real time).

i already had a laptop so as you can see the cost is minimal.

i'll get some pics up on saturday morning, i'm driving up to paramounts king's island(amusement park) today for a little coaster fix.

i'll keep you posted guys, with the install, and probably short documentation or a diary of sorts with the tuning proccess as it progresses.

Quite an interesting setup. I can only imagine the difference in spooling. I wonder how this would work with my stand alone management. hmmm. keep us posted. I've been super busy and haven't been able to check in as much on here.

Looking forward to how the new setup works for you. I probably won't go as far as you in engine management but you never know...things change. 8)

just a quick update guys, the install is going forward as planned, i've been about 10 feet from my laptop for the last couple hours.

just finished fabbing the adaptor wiring harness so i can make the new sensors plug and play, this way i am free to go back and forth between MAS and Speed density for whatever reason.

    i installed the harness,
took the DSMchips eprom out of my ecu, and installed the ostrich cable.

getting ready to run the 5v wideband output signal wire to the ecu as we speak. again this ecu will run entirely at all timmes open loop or closed off of a wideband signal. precision, and mileage woot woot!

After i get this wire soldered in, i'll be setting up the software, and i'll load a basemap bin into the emulator.
    after that....

well hopefully a lil vroom vroom PSHHHHH

more later(and many pics of the proccess)

ok everything seems to be in good shape.

all wiring done(seriously there was hardly any)

as i type i am sitting in my car ready to upload the basemaps and program into my ecu.

    then turn the key.... :!:

    ouch,
soon after my last post i realized i left the drivers for my emulator in another city.
so i've been scouring the net trying to find the drivers i need to install my ostrich so i can get this show on the road.
can't find them, even on the site i bought the emulator from.

until the admin to the ds-map support forum gets back to me with the drivers i need,

i guess i'll be replacing my rear brake pads.

ok kgot all the emulator drivers installed, hd to screw with some com ports as well to finally get it all synced up.

just got the basemap uploaded to the ostrich...

    turn key on....

ok good, no clicking. this means i didn't fry my ecu yay.

ok check logger for sensor values

okk map is normal, coolant and air temp are about the same, good.

lets turn the key one more click...

    seriously i'm nervous...

ok guys, well i got it running!!! wooot

    no more MAS for me.

it was pretty crazy, on the default maps with the injectors at the default deadtimes and scale, it still idled smoother than it ever has before.

got the deadtimes scaled, and injector sizing on point.
and i just go done entering the basemap values into the sheet.
this is what the software looks like, very simple, easy to use. once i get the hang of it i'll probably switch over to tunerpro.
