Why do i not have gears?

I was driving down the interstate with cruise control, and when I stepped on the accelerator to pass a guy, my engine revved. I checked to make sure I was in drive, and then pulled over and I have no Reverse, or any gears. What happened? The tranny has never slipped, no engine code, no leaks, to noises. What should I do and what are my options, thanks guys!

Check the trans fluid. Change it or have it flushed if you havent ever done so. More then likely a blown trans.

check the fluid level. while you are at it drop the pan and change the filter too.

The fluid is at the right level, and it's still red. If I change the filter and do a flush, will it fix it? It's an 8th generation Galant with 146k miles on it. What other things could have caused this?

sounds like your tranny decided to say goodbye...

try a fluid chang the 8g has an internal filter and never really gets clogged. if that does not work maybe your torque converter took a dump then the transmission needs to be replaced if that does not work first , sound like you beat the hell out of that car maybe?

Well, if the fluid level still reads correctly (with the car on, in neutral, with the hand brake applied, and on a level surface) the torque converter and oil pump are probably still good. If it were unusually high, you'd know one of the two was bad. Do you hear buzzing noises from the shift solenoids when you engage a gear? If not, it could be an electronic problem and definitely cheaper to fix than replacing the whole trans.

I appreciate the responses, I will try the idea from WarmAndSCSI. I am taking the car to a trany mechanic on Friday to get the scoop. If the tranny needs to be replaced, I will buy the tranny Stewi. I own a Detail/Accessory shop and I use my car for demo and show so I never run it hard, it's a weird freak problem. Thanks for all your help, all the advice I can get the better.

What options do I have for a motor swap? Can I do a V6 swap from a 99-03 Galant ES or GTZ? Or what would be best? Thanks.

I don't think a motor swap is a good option for you... just think about swapping in a manual if you want to drive stick and have a reliable transmission.

Its not worth doing a V6 swap, you can use a head off an evo then turbo it and make big power.

My guess on the trans is.......

    You guessed it.

Tim, did you read my post? If his fluid level is still where it needs to be, it's not the pump or the torque converter.

Thanks about the pictar! I designed it myself, of my own car. I have owned and built many Hondas, this is the first Mitsu I am working on. So I can take an Evo head and boost it? What are the best mods mechanically for the 4 cyl motor?

Its essentially a .4L larger evo motor, I'm not a 4 banger guy so I'm not the best source for 4 cyl info.

I was talking about the picture I posted of my blown transmission oil pump that I posted.

Trust me, I've had two transmissions do that to me Somehow the last one was still shifting when the pump went out, must have just been fractured.

No problem man, its a decent looking car though.

I've had two transes do that too TJ. Imagine that.

The second one the pump definatly had fractured for awhile, as it wasnt bringing up full line pressure untill 15 ish minutes into driving, so the TC wouldnt lock at all between my house and where I was driving.
