    short shifter install

i am installing a "short shifter" and when i goto take off the old shifter (5 spd) there is nut on the side that I cannot get off, i keep turing it with the rachet and it just keeps spinning, any ideas on how to get this off?
ALSO my rpm's act funny dropping below "1,000 rpms and then reving up to almost "2,000 rpms, but idles fine sometimes, do u think this could be the "TPS" sensor ?:smt111

Do you have a picture of the bolt?
