Great build thread. Makes me miss my car even more!
Accident. Deemed Unfixable. Got a check for it.

  3. #943
yeah, the torque is nice, I drive carefully especially with the rs3s on so Im not straining the drivetrain too hard, I dont like breaking things and the idea of actually launching a car constantly scares me, hence why I do track days rather than drag racing, although once the weather improves I will take the galant down on the street tires to do a couple of non launch passes to see what she will do.

Thanks for stopping by aisianz, been a while since Ive seen you on here. You still rolling in the LS?

The good thing about the lifetime warranties at parts stores is that replacements are free, haha!

damn!! was that the inboard side?

  7. #947
That's the drivers side axle, best part is the one I replaced before I snapped the joint. Passenger side axle has been going strong for 5 years.

I mean is that the tranny side of the axle? If what was you must have hard time getting it out.

  9. #949
Yep tranny side, it wasn't too pad, popped the other side out and just bunched it through

meh, probably not, the key with axles most of the time is repacking them with good grease and putting on new boots, because its usually the joints where they break, in this case, there was really nothing I could have done about it.

Gonne need spares in that case, would suck to have it end your track day early on the few times the Galant gets to see the track.

I just saw an article in a track magazine about cheap tools to keep with you at the track an one of them was a heavy duty magnet to pull the splined in out off the diff in case in snapped off. Im pretty sure it was an intermediate shaft that had no C clip on the end so this wouldnt work for your situation obviously. Did this happen at the track?

  14. #954
No, this happened on a 2-3 shift and then going about 25% throttle. At my last track day I managed to destroy an axle but it was at one of the joints, I have spare axles so its not a huge deal and I understand with the power that Im making and the grip of the tires and how hard I drive the car when it sees the track that axles will break, just not in this manner.

Good place to get heavy magnets is from the hospital. They use a magnet to wipe the memory from a pacemaker so they can reprogram it. After they are done with the magnets they get tossed, the hospital local to me gave me a dozen of them.

Won't pull a circlip axle out though, still handy.

Just make sure to have a spare and leave it as the weak point.

The nice thing is atleast you have an LSD. If you snapped an axle like that with an open diff, best believe the diff will destroy itself. lol Trust me I know. This is the reason why I have Autozone axles. I can replace them unlimitedly (is that a word?)

^^^ This. Except the one time you end up getting the asshole of the yaer behind the counter and gives you crap that abuse isn't covered by the warranty. Then you have to waste time going to another store to swap it.

My best friend is a manager at my local Autozone so I get my hook ups from him. Give him cash and get the 20% discount.
