My 1993 Mirage 4g64 Swap Build Thread

Well after I bought the 1991 Talon Tsi with a bad engine and it did turn out so well. Sold it to a junk yard for $150, after taking the 390cc injectors, turbo manny, resistor pack and some other stuff. Sold most of the stuff on Ebay to make some more of my money back, since I only paid $340 for it and that was towed to me.

After doing more research I found this 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage. I paid $550 for it and drove it home. The 1.5 engine was not responsive at, but when it did respond the Mirage was out pacing the Galant. I got it so cheap because it had an oil leak, that the owner didnt know where it was coming from. After looking over the car I found it had a bad rear main seal, instead of trying to replace I search the net and found Mirage Performance.

At Mirage Performance found a number of swaps I could do, the 4g64,4g63 and 4g63T were the swaps I was looking into. I decided with the 4g64 because the engine and parts were cheap and easy to find. The 4g63 required you to cut and weld the motor mount to get it to fit. I found a 4g64 from and Mitsubishi Expo with 113K on the clock for $200 and I'm using a 1.8 manual tranny from a 1994 Mirage. The Galant tranny required fabrication of the top tranny mount and custom axles, the 1.8 tranny is a direct swap and right on the 4g64.

Pic when I first got the car, super clean.

A trip to the Pull-A-Part, I got 5 speed cables, Pedals, Hyrdo Clutch and MAS. Second pic is the 4g64 in the trunk of the Mirage.

    Pulling the 1.5 engine out

    The 2.4 finally in.

Had to take the tranny back out because I got the wrong drive plate. I had one for a Galant, but needed one for a 1.8 Mirage.

And to add I was using my 1.5 tranny mounts and they were not fitting right, as you can see in the picture I had to remove those. After I got the new drive plate on, I found it hard as hell to get the tranny back on. I had to remove the engine again and put the tranny on while it was out the car. The engine is in car now, but now the engine mount is wrong. The Galant 4g64 and Expo 4g64 are the same, but some bits and pieces are different. Like the throttle body is flipped 180 degrees, the motor mount bolts are different and intake manifold is backwards.

Everything is in the car still gotta fix the motor mount and wire everything up. Will have new pic tomorrow.

After getting the engine running the head or head gasket is going bad, I think the engine is burning coolant cause white smoke is pouring out the exhaust and the engine is running rough. After reading peano's thread about his head gasket going bad and notice his car was doing the same thing mine was doing, I've decided to swap out the SOHC to the DOHC.

Went to the local pull a part and got a head from a 1991 DSM for 58.71, that's including the intake, head and valve cover. The block on the cars was really good condition, I was sad to leave there. I dont know how many miles engine had but it was clean, but the car clean inside and out. This is the same car I got the seats and axles from.

After I took the head off I know why they let the car go, one of the exhaust valve was chipped. Anyway here are some pics of the head.

Thanks for the close ups remarque. I want to do a head swap as well but don't know how to tell if a head is good or not...

What will a chipped exhaust vlave do? Iam guessing compression will be lower in that cylinder and make the engine run ruff amongst other things?

Are there any other areas you kept your eye on to tell if the head is good or not? Maybe warped?

I'm almost positive thats the reason why the car was sent to the pull a part. I mean the cost of replacing the valve would not be that much, but for a car that almost twenty years old I guess the owner said it wasn't worth. Like I said in the first post this car's engine was clean when I took the head off a saw how clean the cylinders and cylinder walls were I said damn. There was another guy there to who was their getting the shifter cables for his Talon said he was coming back to get the block.

Other than chipped valve I didnt check anything else. I'm looking for shop now to get it looked over, but I think it good.
