upon looking through this forum, i realize that i must have been mistaken, anyways, what is the cheapest way to gain hp? hard times call for cheapness
i recently read about a way to "chip" a car to increase performance. is this true? if so, what is the increase and where can i do it or get it done?
.....by the way, i have a 2002 4cyl. thanks.

well depends what kind of gain your looking for, i mean if your looking for something with a little more pick up, but not like blow your head off launch power, then a CAI (cold air intake) or short ram would probably suit you just fine. But if you want blow your head off speed that would be relativly cheap, go with NOS.
About the chip, ive never heard of it called "chipping", but if your talking about upgrading your chip, yes its possible, and yes you see performance gains, BUT it's recommended to upgrade the chip once your satisfied with all your upgrades that you wanted to your engine. So if your looking to get a turbo in the future, i would wait on the chip until after the turbo.

Just ask TOC, he used to have a chip installed.

most everyone says its better to get other mods like intake headers and exhaust or even more before you see good gains from a chip...

the only chipping i've heard of is on ebay i've been seeing this like "20HP MOD PLUS - GAIN HORSEPOWER WITH A CIRCUIT" basically you buy a 90 cents radio shack resistor that u tap into ur mass airflow sensor with, and it says ur getting more air than u actually air, so the car makes more gas to match it. basically runs u rich, whcih is never a good idea.
thanks for the help all. greatly appreciated
Well that's not completely true.Originally Posted by peanotation
1)The resistor is 10 cents
2)It makes your MAF think the air coming in is colder, not that there's more of it.
3)It doesn't make you run rich, it advances your timing about three degrees.
4)It's complete bullshit
I tested the thing several months ago for the club and did a thorough write up on what it does and why, and then went to the track to prove it's useless.

Genuine experience carries a lot more credibility than the ability to answer a question.
I think for us under the concept of "chipping" that the RIPP black box is going to give us the greatest ability to modify the way that the ngine behaves without screwing it up. Besides, almost all of the chips are programmed for WOT, which I personally rarely run at. I still think that breaking into the tranny control is the best thing we could do to our cars.
