    Swapping Throttle Bodies

Someone private messaged me about swapping IAC's so I figured Id post it up, and maybe people can give some input.

I already tried a work around. However now that I rethink it..It may have worked except the throttle cable was too tight.

First off, check these pictures before anything.. 1g TB is on left.

    http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/busterbot/tb2.jpg

Now you can see the passeges and how they differ, The opening for the actual motor that allows air through on the 4g64 is square, so what I did was fill in half of the passege that would normaly gets filled with antifreeze on the 1g, this way I could mount up the 4g64 IAC with its square hole that would half be over the water passege. So now I could mount them up without sucking in antifreeze, I thought maybe I would have blocked off too much and that no air would be able to suck in through the IAC, but I was wrong, somehow, someway too much air was sucking in!

Car started fine but idled at 3k. You cant adjust BISS screw for that it only goes +-250rpm. But now that I think about it, the 1g TB might be a tad fatter then the 4g64, meaning the throttle cable was pulled a little too much, and had the car over reving at idle. I think maybe WED it suposed to be like 40 degrees outside maybe ill swap them again and this time start the car without the throttel cable connected. See where it idles, if its still way high I think I will block off one of the holes that passes air through the plate.

I would really REALLY like to get this to work and I know a lot of other people want it too, 1g TB is 60mm, 4g64 is a mere 52.

Also notice I had to make a thing to be able to mount up the air intake tube, because the 1g TB uses a seperate elbow, and its reall small, so I made one out of a can of tomato sauce and some sheet metal

If you blocked off portions of your IAC then wouldn't this mod be pretty pointless? Even though yes your are getting a bigger intake per say, you are blocking off air passages that help in getting the air from the bigger intake to your engine. If you block this off I don't really see what you have to gain.

Why don't you just get a dremel and make it whatever size you want.

    thats too much work :lauging:

but i think i want to do it...how hard would it be to port my TB and intake mani to 60mm? how much more performance would i see?

Have you taken a loot at the 4g64 tb? Do you really see the huge difference in the 1g and 4g64? You would have to grind away so much, plus geting a throttle plate in, (WHICH IS A BITCH TO REMOVE), PLUS if you didnt do it perfect guess what? You will idle at 4000rpm cause your plate would never seal up.

Ok 1g TB is 60mm, already now your getting more air into your engine, quicker and easier.

Parts of the IAC passeges were filled NOT air intake holes. The internal passeges for the 1g want to let antifreeze flow, while in the 4g64 part of that same passege is what sucks in air for idling. So if you dont fill that passege, your IAC will just pump antifreeze into your engine.

I havnt actualy driven yet so I cant say the what the "butt-o-meter" has to say about this...but my car usualy takes like a full 5 second crank to get started cause i mved my batt into the trunk and with the coldness and all...with this new TB is started like a normal car should

A throttle plate doesn't seal, if it did your car wouldn't run.
Grinding away some of the metal around the inside
BEFORE the throttle plate allows for more aif flow at higher volumetric
efficiency. And if you think changing a throttle plate is hard. Try an
Injection Pump on a 6.0L turbo diesel in a G Van.

The plate for the most part does SEAL. The way your car runs at idle is through the IAC, (hence the name idle air controler), which has its own seperate holes to allow air to passinto, and out of the TB before and after the plate. So that while the plate is closed, thus "sealing" the major intake of air, the motor can let air bypass the plate.

Carving away before the plate will still only let you get 52mm worth of air flowing thruogh since your ending hole is still 52mm. Its like when people change their exhaust pipes to 3" pipes, but then have a 2" cat, its a bottleneck causing restriction. You can't beat that 60mm opening.

I dont have a freakin clue

I hanvt even driven the car, I just started it up to make sure I wasnt idling at 4k like I was the first time I did this. I then pulled off another part that I wanted to fix because it was causing me to leak antifreeze and I was jb welding so that needed 20hrs to cure up good, so tomorow will be driving day.

I dont know how it couldnt give you a little more power, im not saying its gona give you 10hp increase like CAI ads suggest If I feel a little more pull or faster revs in the engine I'll be satisfied. Took me a mere 30 mintues to do the swap, however you have to wait overnight for RTV to cure on the "modded" area.

Website will be up soon by tonight or tomorow afternoon

Been driving it like a madman. Runs great, just make sure you put ur tps sensor with the bolt centered in the slots, otherwise you'll have a lil bouncy reving around 3k. And if you have a manual tranny you'll most likely get a lot more performance increase over an a/t (like my crap).

I've gotten seceral emails with questions...You don't need an afc, or new injectors or anything at all other then the TB and elbow. The increase in airflow is easily handled by the ecu, you'll feel more pull in your car especially at higher rpms.

I seen a 64mm TB up on ebay the other day..maybe its time to upgrade again lol
