so can I just use the block plate and get rid of the EGR valve? What about the line(s) that go to it? What else would I need to do at that point to get rid of the CEL and the not readys?

if you install block off plate then you need to block the like off as well, but it will def. throw a code, because the ecu tests for a flow. Just get it cleaned, man, its worth it. The new one is gonna look like this one in a couple of months. The engines with the block off plate came like that from the factory, it is a totally different ecu.

ah okay. thanks again bud. 1 more question. I was looking on EBAY at the EGR valves. I know EBAY isnt always right but they have listings for 97 and 98 galants anyways. Now if I am not mistaken it looks like
there are 3 vacuum lines in the pics I have seen. Like there is one off the EGR valve itself
and another 2 off the mounting piece. Although I might be wrong.
    like this one says 98
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998-...4506.m20.l1116
there is also a 97 listed and 96 and they look like this
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1996-...1%7C240%3A1318
this one is listed as 94-97 and it was wire and connector as well. Am I better off with
this and where is that connector getting connected to

the first one doesnt look right, but sometimes these stores just use any egr picture they have. The second one looks just about right, and the third one will work as well, it just has the temp sensor that is used in 94 Fed. and Cali spec Galants, its not used in 96-98 Fed spec, but it will work.

yeah the 2nd and third one look right, i have the third one since my car is 94fed. if you're trying to pass smog, i wouldn't block off the EGR since i've read here and there that a properly flowing/working EGR valve will help reduce NOX. i'm having the same trouble passing smog....still LOL

I am not trying to pass smog, we dont have that here. I am just trying to pass inspection that the car is hooked up to the ODB2, and I need it to throw no codes and have no CEL.

okay along with help from Kevin, I got the EGR valve swapped out yesterday. And I reset the ECU. Now how long will I need to wait before the car will be "ready" for inspection. is it driving wise or mileagewise?

Scanned the car again Saturday and got P0400 code. EGR flow malfunction.
found out that apparently I forgot to install the gasket for the EGR valve, used the old one and about 100 miles later light came back on.
scanned again and same code P0400, cleared the code out.
do I need a new EGR valve gasket?
do I need an EGR valve solenoid?
the print out I got from Autozone yesterday doesnt list Mitsubishi it has Nissan, Subaru, Domestic, Honda, Mazda. But the jist of it is either EGR valve, EGR solenoid.
Dunno at a lose here. The EGR valve I put in was infact was used, but where I got it from said it was tested.
    any ideas?

My 97 ES Auto gives the same code. All I do before inspection is pull the battery cable for 15 minutes and then re-connect it right before I run down to the inspection. Been this way for 2 years and passed both times. Usually on the way home the CEL comes back on, but inspection is over and done by then. I am in AZ, though.

So I still have no CEL from when I cleared it out the other day with the scanner. What will the car show if brought in now? Think it will actually be okay or is the code still there, but yet the light is off?

wont work for me that way. It shows as not ready when the OBD2 is hooked up.

well I still havent gotten around to replacing the gasket yet. But I was going for almost 2 weeks with the CEL off. I had scanned the car last week and it came up as not ready. But I can't tell how many not readies. And then Saturday the CEL came back on. I think I am going to see if I can pick up the gasket tomorrow or Thursday and see if that will help.

Try deleting the code with the scanner, and not by disconnecting the battery

thats what I did the last time. And a week and a half later I scanned it and it came up as not ready. And then the CEL came on again. I know in NJ I am allowed to have 2 not readys. But I just can't tell how many I have with the scanner. I am going to scan it tomorrow and see if it is still even throwing the same code
