I think my ?shift solenoid? is going out.

My 2003 90k Galant shifts like crap. It's almost like it's not getting the signal to shift. The RPMs go up, she kicks and shakes, and then shifts. Could this be a solenoid going out? Has anybody ever had to replace a solenoid?

I've had to replace my overdrive solenoid and my Torque converter solenoids, but they were not because of what you are describing, I had SES lights on.

Have you changed your Transmission fluid ever? Might want to start with that first. Use genuine Mitsubishi Diamond SPIII fluid and drain and fill for a start.

I'm changing it tomorrow. If the solenoids were malfunctioning enough to cause my problems would they trigger the SES light?

yes they would trigger the light. I believe you have a problem with your valve body. sounds like the solenoids are not holding the pressure between shifts.

What would be the fix for this?

I had a transmission specialist drive it for me. He said the problem isn't anything serious and the only solution is to do a rebuild. He said the car can go for years the way it is.

Hey, we here on tgc can only give you our opinions based on our experience, and based on what you tell us. So if the tranny specialist said its fine then you should be good.

It's probably not anything to do with the shift mechanism... worn end clutch pack. Just like every other Mitsubishi automatic transmission ever made.

It can be replaced on the car by somebody who knows what they're doing.
