boost has a heavier build being done now though...it will be even more powerful and impressive than the 3.5 he built.
As for passing emissions and wiring harness and all that...the 3.5 is a DIRECT drop in replacement enginethat only differs in the displacement. You can run it off the stock ECU and stay with the 6g72 injectors without having to tune anything. If you use the 6g74 injectors than you will run extremely rich off the stock 6g72 ECU and then will need to tune or emission testing will be a fail.

TECHNICALLY, the engine swap is ILLEGAL, because you can swap to a newer engine *made for the same car*, but seeing as how the Diamante is NOT the same car as the Galant (obviously), and the displacement is larger, it is illegal.
However, I passed emissions solely on the fact that they couldn't even tell the difference between the two engines. They look exactly the same when you look under the hood briefly. Oh and I am untuned using 6g72 injectors
You can actually get by the illegal portion due to the newer engine build dates. They are considered to be more "efficient" and most state inspection places may ask about an engine swap, if the year of the vehicle the engine was pulled out of is older than your car's manufactured date then it's a problem, if the engine is newer you are practically free and clear provided it passes the emission testing.
its not so much as the same make and model of the car, but more that it is from the same manufacturer.
hmm I guess there is some flexibility with the law. I wasn't going to go blatantly saying I did an engine swap though :) I'm wondering is California laws are more specific about it though?
For example, would swapping in an STI engine w/ turbo into a normal Impreza be legal?
There are A LOT of loop holes in the laws, just ave to find them ;)
I would imagine California would be the same when you still consider as long as the engine is from a newer vehicle with better EPA standards than the original equipment. California is always a tricky state though, but I would bet it would still fly through an emission test with a pass, if not better test results than the original engine depending which engine is swapped in.
The 6g74 hasn't really had much update over the 72, with the exception of the fuel injectors (which we know would cause rich condition on our ECU w/o tune, and ultimately a fail on emissions). So really, running your stock 6g72 injectors and ECU, on a 6g74 would probably run lean (something auto makers have been doing to vehicles for a long time now to reduce emissions anyways).
You could easily do that type of swap, it wouldn't be any different than taking in a OEM made N/a vehicle with an aftemarket turbo installed, as long as it can pass the emission testing in the specific state. You are smart to not open up and say right away it had an engine swap. If they don't ask, don't tell. If they do ask, make sure you have whatever information they may ask for.
I know for a fact that out here we have passed numerous inspections and emission testings with some of our diesel trucks (different testing yes), but these were Ford trucks with a Dodge Cummins swapped engine hehe
