01 2.4 with skipping timing belt

Hello guys. I am gonna purchase an 01 2.4 probably tomorrow. The body is in great shape with good paint and all. My problem is the engine more specifically the timing belt is skipping a tooth or two enough cause the car to shut off when moving. I already know i have to rip the head off and get it all checked out -- i just want to know what will cause the timing to jump when applying load. On idle the car is fine. I suspect not tensioned right and or tensioner or idler pully is done so i will change everything while im in there. I just want to get a list of things to check this weekend when i have the time.. Thanks in advance.

i took the head off to the machine shop to get checked out. I noticed however that one of the cylinder walls has a small ring of buildup it looks like towerds the center of the wall. If you run your hand on it its rough and noticeable. I do not see it on the other 3 walls. Im not sure what this means for me so any help would be appreciated.

If the wall is uneven that means the motor needs to be torn down, that cylinder needs to be bored, the piston needs to be replaced and the rings (all of them. not just the bad cylinder) need to be replaced. At this stage your better off getting a junkyard motor, replacing the T-belt, tensioner and water pump on it, and throwing it in.

i bought it knowing it would probably need a new engine so i am ok with that. I will probably use one motor for a project and get another motor for the new car.. I looked at one today for 400 but it has oil like crazy all over the spark plugs.. I need to find a low mileage somewhere.. Thanks for the help guys
