Radar detectors!

I have a old cobra one that my parents bought YEARS ago, before some of you where actually born i think its from around 1994 i have been using it since i got my license and it used to work good but now its just not working anymore. If you have ever had a radar detector then you will understand that driving without one makes you feel like you are driving naked, its a weird feeling i just like knowing if im speeding or not which now a days in more not speeding that there is a cop ahead, which may also tell you that there may be someone pulled over and you can move to the left lane before you get there.

so my question is if you have on what model do you have and do you like it? what dont you like about it?

Im looking to get either a valentine 1 or a escort passport 9500ix but will be open to other options as well if there are some more out there that are really nice and have as good of detection as the escort and the valentine 1!

I've been using my Passport 8500 (Blue) for 2yrs, and let me tell you there has been a few times when I should have gotten nailed. But thanks to the Escort, there 3 less tickets on my insurance companies record.

Picked up a escort pass port 8500 x50 used for 150, they are still top of the line and i can not fathom spending 500 bux on a radar detector when this one will work just fine, making a custom mirror mount for it at work.

Completely irrelevant question but.... Can the cop do something against you when he sees a radar detector when they pull ye over? I've never even seen one in a car yet, and all my friends are ricers.../sob.

I doubt it, seeing as they are made for cars... Lol. In all seriousness, they just plug into your power outlet, and there ya go.

Not unless they are outlawed in the state. I know Virginia and Cali have laws against them, and it's like a $400-500 ticket and some points. I have heard of the fuzz giving people harder tickets because of them. Last time I was pulled, the trooper just asked me about it, and if I picked him up. Which I did, but it was the same time he nailed me!

Not always, but yes you have a point. My detector will pick a cop up from at least a half mile away if he has it on...

thats the radar/laser detector i have. it works great for me. gives me plenty of warning.

And i feel so naked without it. i have it up all the time just to see how clever cops get with their hiding spots.

also make sure you know how to read it right. if you do, then you should never get a ticket

side note: i swapped my stock horn for some aftermarket one. everytime i honk my horn the laser alert goes off. i shit you not lol

most of the highway patrol doesnt even use radar any more its called LIDAR (ligh-dar). Its a fricken laser, and we all know the g cannot go 182,000 miles per second lol.. but you can put prisms up in your windows to slow down the the beam, as it bounces around looking for the right reflection to get back... there is alot of stuff out there nowdays lol

Well my goal really is not to beat the law with one, like i said i have been using on since the day i got my license, yes sometimes they do not go off till it is to late, and yes lasers are impossible to beat. But remember my reasonings for wanting and liking them, I myself at most will do 5mph over the speed limit, i give myself enough time do get where i need to go and my insurance is high enough from my past driving where now that im getting older that shit is not worth it anymore. So my main reason for having one is to know if something is ahead of me could be a accident or someone pulled over, the radar will pick that up and i can start getting ready to move over and not have a chance for getting a ticket for not slowing down and moving over for a emergency vehicle which is a state law in WI. If you see someone pulled over or a cop with its lights on, the law says you need to slow down by 10 mph and move into the opposing lane away from the emergency vehicle. Also it is nice to know if there are cops in the area since where i live the cops really have no crime to deal with all they have for revenue is traffic violations so they make the most of it and will pull you over for anything. Example i got a ticket for my exhaust one night from a cop, next night same cop gave me a disorderly conduct ticket for the exhaust, and the following night same cop gave me a failure to maintain vehicle ticket for my exhaust, tried fighting these in court and saying it was harassment but that didn't stick they dont care. So if there is a cop near by when im in the galant i would put it in neutral and coast by them until it was ok to use the throttle again, also had to turn my fog lights off because they would pull me over for that too.

So my new radar will be this 8500 x50 (red) which has a great review and looks like it picks stuff up really early.

well if you have 50 dolllar one more then likely yea ....when it comes to radars the more you spend the more distance of detection you get..on my x50 i've detected KA bands up to a mile away lol thats way out of the trap zone

^^^dude that happened to me... i see a lone car parked in the dark with someone outside with a little LED that flickered on...I braked asap 2 seconds later my radar went off saying LASER...

yea the last ticket i got he asked me why i had one and i told him my exact reasonings for having one which where stated above, and he gave me that ticket on top of speeding. The only reason i was speeding is because there is a part on our interstate that is down hill and durring that portion of the downhill the speed limit changes from 65 to 55 and i got a ticket (while coasting) for 75 in a 55 did not relize that the speed limit changed ten feet from where i was pulled over :/ cops are dicks! He gave me the speeding on freeway 20-24 mph over and the obstructed view for my radar detector that i have above my mirror.

Geez, sounds like it's more trouble than just driving safely around cop areas.

I'm sure most of new jersey-ers and NY'ers here have noticed those "Spot" areas where there will be one 100%...

In anyways, you just gotta be smart about these things, I get lots of cops that sniff around when they potentially see me speeding or something but get disinterested because I am awesome :P

LIDAR is the new thing. A laser detector is sorta useless because it will only go off when the cop points it at you, and by then, he will already have your speed. There are laser jammers out there, but then the cop will also know something is up when he cant read your speed.
