car wont idle when cold !!!

my cousin's 99 wouldnt idle when he starts it in the morning unless he held the gas pedal for few minutes then its fine, i checked the iac and replaced with 2 other working ones and it didnt make a difference, the only other thing i can think of is the TPS but i havent tried to swap it yet.

any ideas of what else could be causing this problem ??

thanks for any help in advance.

i would check for vacuum leaks and it sounds like it could be something fuel related to.

checked for vacuum leaks intially and found out that the intake manifold was cracked so we got that replaced but it didnt make a difference, we checked for other leaks and none was found

how would it be fuel related when the car runs smoothly once its warmed up ??

I have the same prob with my 2003 v6 3.0 . I was sure it was the IAC and am now looking to buy one for cheap. If you changed yours and saw it didnt work, im thinking about saving myslef the $ until you find some solution. They are super expensive.

cleaning the throttle body didnt do much, MAF wasnt problem on mine either. I do have codes on the car for the O2 sensors... could that be the prob ??

O2 sensors don't normally cause it to act this way but at least u have codes but we have no codes.

U can get the IAC on eBay for cheap that's where he bought his for cheap.

The TB must be clogged as hell. Take that sucker out, pull the bottom apart and clean it.

Its mostly a DSM problem, but even the 8g TBs work on the same principle. The FIAV (choke) is spring loaded temperature sensor that opens when the coolant thats running thru it is cold and it allows more air to flow. It closes when the coolant temps reach certain temp and the engine can sustain its own idle with or w.o the help of the iac.
God created turbo lag to give the v8's a brief moment of hope.

ill try that, we have a spare TB so ill clean that out thoroughly and install it and hope it fixes the problem

is there a way to test the IAC to make sure its operating properly ?? cuz now we have 3 of them and i hate to throw them away if they are working

Are they for the i4 or v6? You could sell them. I have a v6 tb laying in my garage waiting for a iac sensor so i can put it on my g.

Im in need of a v6 IAC too. If they work and the price is right ill be happy to take it.

Yes! The O2 sensor can totally do it depending on how cold the engine reads out. With a bad O2 sensor the car is pushing more gas then it actually needs when cold. So by reving it up you are by passing the O2 from an idle position to a running position. And heating up the O2 at the same time. Its long to explain. Lond story short the mix is to rich due to a bad O2 causeing the motor to stall at idle when cold.

The IACs that we have are for the I4

If you think it might be the IAC then check this out. You may be able to clean out your original one.

Also I havent tried swapping a I4 IAC to a V6 but I know I wouldnt try due to them being different maybe.

Still replace the O2 sensor. But when you do buy a new one from the dealer. Do not buy Bosch replacement. I have only heard bad things with people doing that.
