Car self-idling

So yesterday on my way to school and refueling after turning the car on the car began to rev itself from 1000-2000 rpm and dropped to 1000 and repeated. I panicked and shut the car off for a minute, but when i turned it on it was gone. Driving home it smelled as pure gasoline does and the trans was abruptly shifting in an odd way. only 127k miles. any suggestions? ideas?

Could be bad tank of gas. I try to stay away from independent gas stations and stick to the bigger brands I.E: Shell, Chevron, Mobil.

Yeah could be the gas, or the cold weather.

still having the same problem and then some. whilst braking the rpm's jump about 500 rpms everytime i hit around 1000 rpms.

today on my way to class tho the idle was really low at around like 100 each time i had braked and nearly stalled each time. tried to keep power throughout the rest of the drive and once i made it there and parked it immediately stalled.

about 20 minutes ago when i got home the idle was fairly high at about 1300...hit the gas a few times in park and itd level off at 1300 each time. turned my heat off and then the self-revving came through again.

Your FIAV is bad. Its the bottom part of the throttle body that contains the IAC and the FIAV. The FIAV is the part that raises your idle on a cold start. Once the coolant that flows thru it warms up, the wax in the FIAV shuts the ports letting extra air in.

When the FIAV goes bad or dirty, it keeps the ports open or partially open, so air gets thru and into the intake manifold. That raises the idle and when it reaches 1200 rpms it hit factory set fuel cut for idle and it bounces to low rpms. Then the whole process repeats.
