Also, I asked this in a post earlier, how does one remove the lower (thicker) chrome part? Any tips on technique or tools? I would like to snatch this from a DE at a yard but of course I don't wanna damage it.

Want to know something a little extra about the LS I4? No GTZ door cladding. Another spotters guide difference.

in 2002, they changed alot of small things. here's another very small easily overlooked one... the rear bumpers on 1999-2001 have 4 small slits in the bottom 2 long horizontal indentations (2 slits each indentation); in 2002, they filled those slits in and almost all OEM replacement bumper covers (mitsu and aftermarket) had those filled in as well so it's an easy way to determine if the rear bumper cover on a 1999-2001 is original (as it will have those 4 slits).

    1999-2001:

    2002-2003:

also, all 1999-2001 had the traditional red triple diamond emblems, in 2002 mitsu moved to the new corporate chrome badges.

those door mouldings are kinda hard to get off i broke all mine getting them off but you can get them off without breaking, just go slow. new ones just pop on no prob. They are about $90 from dealer.

contributing: 99 galants have 2 piston front brake calipers :)

I have a 2001 ES V6 that I bought brand new from the dealer in October 2001 and my rear bumper has NO slits in the 2 long horizontal indentations. I have the red mitsu symbol in the back so it's def a 2001 and not an early 2002

well i love all black no chrome DE. i wish i did have vanity mirror ligths. i cant check my look when i get out of my baja pantie ride.
something is buggin me tho. u said that the DE has raw black mirrors and the trunk bezel but the only thing not color coded are my door handles. the trunk has like a carbon look to it and so does the grills. i got one replacement grill off a 2003 in the junk yard and its darker then the original passenger side. so those this mean took them off another car?

btw jaydal when you google galant grill your picture comes up lmao

could be that they started making and using the slit-less bumpers at the factory mid model year... they do that stuff sometimes... u might have a later 2001 that was produced right before the full facelift in 2002.

sounds like they made the change mid year 2001... normal probably started producing the slit-less bumpers ahead of the facelift in 2002... now what would b surprising is if anybody had a '02+ w/ the slits from factory.

Behold a silver DE so you can see the contrast:

Door handles are flat black but I installed the chrome covers. As specter said my grill was charcoal greyish but my trunk garnish was chrome. Also no woodgrain, flat black everything full black door moldings and no fog lights

yes the 8G DE had black interior trim (and manual remote mirrors instead of power) for the entire run; all other trims from 1999-2001 had the woodgrain pieces. in 2002 the ES and LS went to silver trim while the GTZ got carbon fiber twist. also from 1999-2001, the gauges had a bezel (GTZ had white faces), in 2002 the gauges lost the bezel and the GTZ had dark greyish blue faces.
