    Straight piped

    i have a 2001 4g64 full exhaust from header back but only straight piped with 2.25'.... i love the idle sound and i know im loosing tons of back pressure but i was wondering if the only way to gain some back is by throwing a muffler on it?

    Exhaust u want as little pressure as possible even more for turbo. That's why people use larger pipes etc.

    Incorrect please try again.

    Look up exhaust scavenging, and its relation to performance. Also read in on the performance of scavenging with higher comp cars vs lower such as the 4g64

    Also turbos provide backpressure, post turbo doesnt matter as long as there is some sort of dump

    We are both right and talking about different things I think. In the pipe section u do want gases to leave the the esxhuast pipe as fast as possible. Scavebging has to do with the air flow between intake PORT-piston-and-exhausr port. hence loop scavenging basically the ports are tuned so that the pressure difference makes burnt gases leave the cylinder and allow for intake gasses to come in. So we are both right but the intake and exhaust ports are already made this way. In pipe parts u want low backpressure. So we are talkin about different things. But I know for sure that you want low pressure cause gases are passed mach.3 and rules of gases are opposite after that mach. so gases want more area in order leave.     My advice though is that the muffler and cat have most restrictions. U can get a straight through cat, and a larger muffler like from v6 or straight through muffler and that should be good enough no need to go full 3 inch until more power is being made I e turbo.

    Yes I think that's what he was talking about.which as I read is why things like overlap and can profile come into play mivec etc. I was just talking exhaust.it's crazy cause string cycle is ideal for high rpm and Otto is good for low and mid, damn laws of thermodynamics.
