    1998 ES: broken timing belt

Well my 1998 ES broke its timing belt. Supposed to get 60K miles out of them but only got 47K on this one. Changing the timing belt to see if it will still run despite it being an interference engine. My early 1994ES (bought in 1993) likes to break timing belts right at 60K. Despite having three timing belts break on the 1994, she still runs well at 307K miles. The 1994 is sidelined for transmission problems so on the bright side if the 1998's engine is toast, I'll pull the 5 speed swap I put in her 40K ago and put it in the 1994. That will make the wife very happy because she wants me to thin the herd.

I'd post a picture of the timing belt wrapped three times around the crankshaft gear but don't see that option anymore.

Timing belt done but still won't start. Doesn't even try to fire off .
I'm thinking the next step is a compression test. Anything else I should do to confirm the valves/head is toast?
I have a spare DOHC head I could throw on it but not sure of waht all would need to be done or if it is worth while. Thoughts about just replacing the head? Moving this post to car problems where it belongs

So after replacing the broken timing belt and the car not starting, I did the compression test. Can't remember the exact numbers but all four cylinders were within 10psi of each other. When the timing belt broke it had wrapped around the crankshaft and had to be pried out of there. I took a chance and replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Car fired right up.
It has a slight ticking noise now but she's running normally. I have not put her back on the road to see if the engine will come apart when under load but it is good to know that even on the later 7G(b) engines that just because the timing belt breaks your engine may not be totaled. This is the first time I have heard of a later model 7G(b) breaking its timing belt and running afterwards without redoing the valves. I may have just got lucky as I was only idling when the belt broke on the 98 but my 94 ES (bought in 1993) has broken three timing belts without damage, once while doing over 100MPH. I'll update her status once I actually put her back on the road.

my 98 with the broken timing belt is still running good. She sounds a little bit like a diesel now due to the valves meeting the pistone when the belt broke but otherwise runs just fine.
