    Slight performance increase needed!! :)

Hi guys! I'm new on the forum. I've got an '88 6th gen Galant (one of the first 6th gens).

I need some ideas on how to get my Galant to produce around 150HP instead of the <110HP it's doing now. The manual states that the car has 109HP, but I'm guessing the engine's mileage has worn those HPs down a bit

It's a standard 4G63 SOHC. I'd rather not do an engine swap or a DOHC head conversion, as parts/engines for that would be hard to come by in my country. I know the DOHC 16V head would give me 145HP, but it's nearly impossible to get one over here.

As you've probably figured out, I'm not after insane HP figures. I just need to have the engine make some 150HP so I can get real value for my money when adding nitrous. With nitrous, I'm aiming for 180-190HP...

I plan to replace the original air filter box with a KN or Raid HP cone air filter setup and custom make my own stainless steel tubing for it. This way I'll be able to place the cone air filter element right behind the front grille or in very close proximity to it and add some velocity to the air that is fed to the engine. But how much can I expect to gain from this simple mod?

I understand HKS makes a replacement cam for the 4G63, but does anyone know whether it's compatible with the SOHC Galant engine?
HKS also carries metal head gaskets for the 4G63, so I'll ask again: Will these fit the Galant SOHC?

What about swapping the original injectors for ones with larger capacity - will that affect HP output, and in particular - how will it affect HP output when combined with the cone air filter element/increased air velocity?
Larger injectors are made by a company named RC Engineering. Has anyone got any more info on this company?

Any and all ideas/help on how to get a little more output from the engine will be greatly appreciated. I really need to prove the Galant's potential to the locals

    Thanx

the HKS products are all for the DOHC 4G63T found in the VR4, so no they wont work. ur best bet for a cam is a custom one, if you could find some springs and retainers that would be even better(i dont know of any for the 8 valve 4g63)A good free flowing exhaust with mandrel bent piping is also a way to free up some horespower.

air filter mod is going to be minimal in hp figures, but will better your throttle response. injectors arent really necessary until you add you nitrous.(RC Eng. is a great company)

    maybe some custom pistons????

Continuing the exhaust theme, I know REMUS do a rear exhaust section to fit the E88 galant 4G63; It bolts straight on to the original system, so wont give much HP for the price but every little helps

[if you want pictures of it, I've just finished getting one modified to fit my 1990 4WD so I can sort some out]

    Find the Remus homepage here;http://www.remus.at/remus.php?ln=2

Hello buddy and welcome to the TGC!

Well I have a 1991 GLSI 2.0L 8Valve SOHC too. There is nothing much you can doo to increase your horsepower. I've been researching for the past two years but I've come to the conclusion that you'd spend way too much money for mods if you own SOHC.
This is the story... SOHC engine is not made for sport ride - and that's it.
I've only seen one guy, and sue me if I'm wrong , but I'd give my hand in the fire if he is not from Norway, but yes - he has instaled a TD04H 14b turbo on to his 2.0L SOHC 1990 Galant... He can now speed up from 0-100km/h in about 6,5 seconds
    Here's the link: http://medlem.spray.se/galantturbo/
Drop him an e-mail, he could help you...
    This is his coockpit:

But eventhou, the parts for SOHC engines are fucking hard too find, and there is really nothing much you can do, to make some decent HP.
The best thing you can do is to upgrade to 2G Eclipse (from 1995-1999) MAF sensor and 2G K&N air filter. The cams from DOHC, the gasket from DOHC etc... they WILL NOT FIT your car!

I hope you'll check these links out... they are all from my Favorites folder... and I was looking for them for like two years...

I have AWD GLSi SOHC, so my suspension is the same as at GTi or VR4 (just without ECS), so there are a few links that will leed you to suspension parts for all wheel drive suspension, and if your car is FWD - they are not usefull...

Anyway, good luck with your car, and have fun browsing those links.

the best thing i think you can do is have proper planning. do some reasearch. rasko has given a big bunch of links that you should check out. see waht the options are to your car. like i said research. another thing that can help with performance is just regular mainteance. make sure that the car has fufilled all the things that needs to be done in the to the car, fix any problems and yea while doing that have the upgrades in mind. if something breaks or needs to be replaced see if you can get an upgrade to it. but yea like i always say, modding a broken car is pretty much stupid cuz no matter how much u mod it, its still broke. fix it while you mod it.

Webhosting for less than $3 a month? put "pinoyesv6" as a promo code.

    Thank you!!

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll check out all the links and see if there's anything for me on them.

That turbocharged galant was made by a Swede, not a Norwegian. But what the hell, Sweden is just across the border
Apart from that, I just saw a website that featured a Norwegian galant with a 280HP turbocharged VR4 engine (the engine had been imported straight from Japan).

I take it you're right about performance parts being scarce for my model, otherwise I guess I would have found some already...

I think my only option for an "easy" upgrade in performance now is to import a 145HP 16V engine+gearbox from a GTi Galant from Germany.

    Sorry - he only had 270HP, not 280 :-)

    Filter box mod! :-)

I read an article on removing stuff around the air filter box on this forum yesterday...
Today I removed all the unnecessary boxes and tubing from my air filter box, so now I can see the paper filter directly through the holes in the filter box. It's now got a nice, deep tone and produces an awesome sound on acceleration!

    here's couple things u could/can do.

    1. get bigger/better fuel pump
    2. maybe bigger injection nozzles.
    3. work your valves so that they are little bit "thinner"
(hard to explain in english don't know the terminology"
    4. get new crankshaft with different angle...(again maybe wrong term...)
5.New exhaust (fully beginning from front)
    6.New intake.
    7.ex. K&N air filter...
    8.some chip..

Well here was everything that i could come up....
best thing would be turbo engine =

    In the interests of helping your English, I think you mean;

    4. "Porting & Polishing" the valves [for better flow of air/exhaust gases ?]

    5. A Reprofiled cam [to open valves further and for longer ?]

Hope this is what you meant

Rasko - san is the master of links,.. haha... (man,.. talking about research..)

first of all,.. performance is not cheap,... but in your case (sorry without any offense) your engine,.. or the cyl. head to be more specific, is a big drawback,... i think you should focus on that matter first,...

so, in my opinion,... swapping the engine is actually the cheapest and simplest mod for you,... yes,.. maybe a bit extreme,... but do the calculation again of how many parts you have to buy and install, including labour cost to get to the same level of an engine swap will do,...

i don't know how much shipping you will need,.. but trust me on this one,.. buying direct from japan, or at least asia is the cheapest way of acquiring an engine for swap. one more thing, get a front cut or half cut if possible then tell them to send only the parts you actually needed,.. sell the rest to them,... this way is cheaper than buying separate engine, ECU, wiring, etc. anyway,.. you will need them later...

by the end of your swap project,.. you can either sell your stock motor as a whole, or piece by piece (whichever more convenient and gives more benefit)

i can say that coz i did both path,... now i have two engines for my car,... one stock GTi + turbocharger,.. the other is stock VR4,... and the VR4 full swap is proven to be cheaper (as long as you don't get fucked by the one who sold it to you)

i hope my opinion can give some kind of help for you

it's currently installed as default motor for the car as the VR4 engine is currently being "rebuilt"

so sorry man, can't sell you the engine,...

you lived quite far from here (Asia) let alone Indonesia (down south),... i think the shipping cost for an engine from over here will kill you at the first attempt, hehehe....
try your local importers, i think they can sneak one from japan along with some other things, don't they ?!

btw, how did the AWD perform?! does it standing in the way of the engine (lower SOHC power output VS AWD extra rotational mass)

SOHC is too weak engine

Anyway, If everithing goes fine, my car is gone by next week - it's for sale. I found another Galant - it's GTi (16V DOHC AWD 4WS AC etc...)

Don't want too tell anything yet, I will keep you guys posted! You will be the first one to know
