I'd prefer the 3rd gen...here's a tip though, go to http://www.metacrawler.com and do a search with the terms "popo vr-4" and you should come up to a Japanese VR-4 website. On it there are both 3rd gen tails and 2nd gen tails on various VR-4 models in the Album link.
