PLASTIC MESH INSTALL (easy instructions with pix)

- TYPES OF MESH
- AFTER I CUT THE CENTER PIECES OUT
- BEFORE I PAINTED THE BLACK MESH SILVER
- AFTER
- BEFORE

**************************************************
INSTALLING WIRE MESH INTO YOUR LOWER FRONT BUMPER
**************************************************

TYPES OF MESH:
Thick wire mesh (flat sheet = $20-$40) - found at autozone, pep boys, schucks, etc...
Thin wire or plastic gutter guard (roll = $1-$5) - found at lowes, home depot, ACE Hardware, etc...
I bought every type of mesh I could find. I tried the cheapo wire mesh that comes in a roll. That stuff is garbage. It'll crumple up like a newspaper. I thought the plastic mesh worked really well because it's durable, bendable, cheap and it's easy to paint.

TOOLS: Hacksaw, wire cutters, heavy duty zacto/razor knife & paint (if applicable).

REMOVAL OF INNER FINS
--------------------------------
1. Use a hacksaw to saw off the inner fins.
2. Use a heavy duty zacto knife to cut the nubs down.
note: Removal of the middle fins will leave an arrow shaped cut on both sides. Some people fill it with fiberglass, bondo, etc.

INSTALLING THE WIRE MESH (basically, shove the mesh in the bumper)
-------------------------------------
1. Cut the wire mesh to make it fit into your bumper. (Mesh with a height of 6" worked the best for me)
2. Insert the mesh into the lower front bumper.
3. Adjust to desired fit. (use a pencil, screw driver, keys, etc to push and pull it into shape)
[i]note: I didn't need any screws or adhesives to get the mesh to stay. If you cut the mesh with a 6" height, it will bend naturally with the bumper to hold it in.

DONE.

how did you go about filling in the holes left by cutting out the inner fins?

get plastic binding body filler...i got the guy at the shop to do it for me....but you can do it yourself...just treat it like any normal body piece just make sure the filler adheres to plastic. I think the guy said it took a couple sandings to get it down to the right smoothness....i actually just got it on the car...i wish i had a digital camera i'd show you guys...i need a way though to secure the wire on the grill....it sticks in place but it wants to push in....anyways, he filled it primed it and then painted it. I have a black car so he painted it black...i'd say go black with whatever car you have and get black mesh for it

APC Chrome Mesh

Buy the double-sided 3M tape from Auto store. Black tape with red paper that peals off. It's about 1cm thick, 1.5 meters long. $4. Line the backside of your opening with this (it's the tape they use to apply emblems etc. It won't come off easily) cut mesh accordingly and bend lip over onto tape. Solid, and without screws.

I want to do this but I'm afraid I'll screw up the bumper when I remove the fins...any suggestions on how to do this easily, or is it fool proof?

Hey I seen wanted to do this for a long time but I was always scared of messing up. But today I was bored so I decide hey lets try it since im getting my kit shortly. Well I like to say great Directions . I only used the hacksaw, and a real sharp scissors, and my dermal sanding bits (Works Great) it evens the fins/nubs down to perfect flat surfaces.

Well, heres the link.

Ps-If you go to lowes in the gutter dept. They should have a metal mesh which fits the bottom almost perfect $1.29. Just gota cut 2" from both ends.

Its called : Premium Hinged Gutter Guards
: Fits 4",5" gutters (36" long)
:Company name: Gutter World

Hope that helps

install on the 02 is even easier than the older 8g's since you don't ahve to worry about them bars. but yea the mesh just goes in the hole and you might want to secure it down.

Suggestions

I just did this on the weekend and just a few things I would like to add.

To make it stay in place get one or 2 of those old metal clothes hangers Cut them into smaller pieces of like 6 inches or so and scoop it into the loop down torwards the bottom of the mesh.

Then wrap it under the black plastic part under the bumper and hook it tight to the metal peice that holds your bumper together underneath your car. Stick your head under there you'll see it.

I did that on the 2 corners of the mesh and on the middle cause it looked like it was going to annoy me when it comes off and I am doing 90 on the Tunpike. LOL...

I have an 02 Galant and it was cool cause I didnt have to saw anything.

I'll post up some pictures when I can.

if you read the description, its not even painted black. its still silver in color. then looking at the size im almost positive thats some 99 cent gutter mesh form the hardware store.

if you really want to secure the mesh, 6" tall mesh won't cut it. at least on a 99-01 front bumper. i bought a giant 3'x8'?? sheet of mesh for 8 bucks at the hardware store and painted it. works just right. i have enough to do like at least 4 cars lol

if you really want to secure the mesh to the bumper you'd have to fold over the edges and attach that to the bumper. if you look at the orignal tutorial the mesh just floats there. so if i were a piece of debris and were to hit the mesh hard enough the mesh wouldn't do anything. but with mine, mine is glued into place so if i were to kick the mesh all i'd do is dent the mesh but won't go through and hurt whatever is behind the mesh.
