    timing?

    if i put a whole new dist in -does the timing have to be redone?

    yes, the timing must be redone. you can get it close by ear, with the engine running, turn it one way. if you retard it, the engine will slow down, but it will be very smooth. that is the wrong way. you want to advance it till the engine starts to buck, then back it off till it runs smooth, then check it with a timing lite. if you have a vacuum advance, this must be done with the vacuum line disconnected, and plugged.
