is there any way to convert the timing belt to a timing chain setup?

I'd guess there probably IS a way... there's a 4G64 Mighty Max that I believe uses a timing chain. Haven't heard of anyone doing a swap though..

You dl the software free, design the part and choose what materials its going to be made out of, and the software tells you the cost it would be to get 1 made, 10, 100, 1000 etc..and then if you want it, you send the file to the company and pay and they mail the part to you. 1 gear lets say will cost you $350, but if you bought 1000 it will only cost you $11 a gear ( huge price reduction but your paying $11,000 out of your pocket!) and then you can sell them all over ebay for $50 each!

Sure timing chains are stronger, but if you change your timing belt and components regularly, you should have much to worry about...

Well, Iam going to bust the bublle.
In our cars it con not be easyly done and if you can do it it will be expensive. Why??
The timing chain needs lubrication.. How are you going to do this,??? you need to have some oil on the chain so the only way for us to have it done is to replace the plastic front of the engine with some metal cover and then what about the oil, how is going to get there, the drainning back to the oil pan.
No one said it would be completely maintenence free..lube it urself like a bike chain. motorcyles with chain drives lube it up with this stuff that makes a white film on the chain and starts to disapear with age so you know when to relube.. They sell automatic chain oilers, basically a small bottle that drips out a little oil from a very thin tube directly onto the chain. Something like that could be easily fashioned up. As long as there is a cover over the chain area keeping it pretty much dirt free you won't get chunks of crap sticking into the chain oil and gumming it all up.
Its just an idea to get peoples tinkering minds rolling.. no ones actually gona spend the $4 grand on getting the gears and tensionsers made..its not worth it.

so the million dollar question, why arn't all cars made with timing chains rather than timing belts? it would save hundreds of thousands of people from spending $2,000 to get their heads rebuilt cause the timing belt broke and they bent a bunch of valves.
american cars are..but theyre cam to crank distance is 1/2 of ours, the ones that are belt drive have kits to convert it to chain drive, and there are kits that have no chain or belt at all, full gear driven. Just look through summit catalog and you'll get the idea. The chain/gear drive does have an aluminum timing cover and its all self oiled in there. But like I said the cam to crank distance is very very short and so the area is real small, while we would have a 3' long chain or something like that..

timing chains are not wanted by most manufacturers for a multitude of reasons.Originally Posted by peanotation
