Difference in LSD's
Ok i didn't do a search cause i don't thik it's been brought up beforebut..
What's the difference in performance and application between a helical LSD and the "Brick" LSD.
SBR sells the brick, and i trust them far more than something off ebay, i was just curious.

Theres basically 3 types of LSDs for our cars. The LSD insert, helical LSD, and clutch-type lsd.
SBR, BM Tranny, and a few other companies make the LSD insert. It just basically slides into your stock differential and will distribute power to each wheel equally. So no matter what situation your car is in, it will always give 50% power to each wheel. Which is a lot better then stock, as stock is an open differential and distributes the majority of the power to the passenger side wheel.
Magnus can explain the Clutch-type vs helical way better then I could:

@Seth
Ones that SBR sells, they should fit a 7g tranny right?
I want to get one when I buy the ACT 2100 so I can put them together.
-
Me and Peano have SBR inserts in our 7g 5spd trannies, so I guess it works just fine

yeah i think i'm just gonna go the insert route. i don't think i'm ready for magnus yet. Those dsm's there are crazy!!!!!! I was looking at the exhaust manifolds they had, and the pics on there are insane! WTF?!

Yah just comes down to how much you want to spend. $189 for an insert or $700-800 for a true helical or clutch-type LSD.
Im happy with my insert for now, but if I start autocrossing or road racing then I want to upgrade to a clutch-type.

the benefit to the LSD insert, such as the one from SBR and BM, is it's cheap and easy to install, and it gets the job done for the most part. the clutch type LSDs are much much more efficient, work much better, but wear out over time. also, the installation procedure is somewhat of a bitch i've heard. i think you replace your entire differential, and only transfer the top main gear over, it's the big one held down by the 8 bolts, but there's some machining required? idk, been a while since i clicked around the dsm transmission forums

is the lsd from slowboy racing a good way to go if im doing a 5-speed swap?

it's a good idea to install it before you put the tranny in your car. you can still burn out in first gear, but it's much more controllable and civilized

The SBR insert sounds like just what I need. Any tutorials on installing one?
My friend said he pulled a tranny on an Eclipse and he said it was easy, so the galant should be easy also.

I used this tutorial, as did Peano. Its not realy that difficult. Alls you have to remove is 5th gear which is easy to re-assemble. I only had to use my air tools to get the big gear off the differential, everything esle can be used with hand toola and breaker bars.
