well it might not be his answer, but mine would be that megasquirt totally OWNS any piggyback ecu on the market.Originally Posted by Johnathansgalant
it is actually more expandable, adjustable, adn upgradable than 90% of the standalone market.
think about being able to run a seperate coil for every cylinder w/o wastespark,
running full blown speed density (like a honda, no more mass)
complete and mapable boost control,
unrestricted control over fuel enrichment and timing.
log all of yoru engine metrics in real time. all of them
its a pretty solid setup, just needs someone to tune it.
of course there are many many support boards out there.

Not only can you log real time, you can burn changes to the Megasquirt ECU real time! Not that you would want to be driving and adjusting your fuel maps at the same time, you would have a friend do it :P
I know DSMLink cannot log and make changes at the same time, not sure about eManage.

i wonder if there would be anyone in the austin area with any experience willing to help me tune it. I am thinking i will definitely get the megasquirt (with black case...sleeeek) because it seems worth the money. I guess for the price of a junkyard turbo i could get a brand new one that im sure has an internal wastegate for 75 more. I still dont know about the intercooler. What intercooler fits and will i need to mount it in the front or in the engine compartent for it to fit? so new final price im looking at:
Turbo: $240
Intercooler: ~$100
Manifold: $150
Megasquirt: $250
Injectors: $100
Final price: ~$840
For a turbo set up thats pretty reasonable compared to the $3k kits. I still need to know about that intercooler though.
i have a small 16g with an fmu and an inline fuel pump my air/fuel is at 10.5 at 7.5 psi, but i can run 12. i have the stock injectors. the fist turbo on my car was a 14b and hostley it worked better for a cheap kit. the problems i had over a year ago was, i was cheap so i got rubber fuel hose for oil lines going to the turbo. needless to say 80psi on a 60psi line dosnt work so i got stainless steal. then i had the same problem with the fuel lines so i did the same thing. all im saying is its not good to be cheap if u want relibilty.

My car used to run a 9-10AFR, but with my new chip I run a solid 11.4 with good timing and the power increase is like night and day!

so i should get braided oil and fuel lines? will i need a new fuel pump also?
aand i really need this problem solved HOW AM I GONNA PUT AN INTERGOOLER IN MY G WITH THE STOCK FRONT BUMPER?
Just cut the inside of the bumper a tad or remove the crashbar all entirely.
As for the turbo, dont get that t3/t4 you posted. Get what is proven and easy o find, ie 14b, 16g, 18g, 20g, or any DSM hybrid turbo. If your wanting cheap, try finding a 14b or big 16g in good condition. All would be internally gated and you could use a DSM exhaust manifold and o2 housing which are both cheap and widely available.

is it legal to take off the crash bar (the crash bar being that think going out in front of the radiator?)? and i assume that i need a dsm manifold that is made for a 3g eclipse because it has the same engine. is it ok to mount the intercooler right in front of the radiator, isnt it usually below it so it is unrestricted? then again i guess it only covers half.
what do you think of this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/14b-1g-ecli...1QQcmdZViewItem
I dont know if its legal, a lot of people dont use them. Putting the FMIC in front of the radiator isnt a problem. 95% of people that have an FMIC, it covers their radiator, other 5% have crappy top mounts hah.
And by DSM manifold, I mean a 1g or 2g eclipse manifold, they bolt up no problems. They just interfere with your a/c so it will have to be removed.
As for that turbo, it looks to be in descent condition. Be sure to ask him if theres no left/right shaftplay along with in/out shaftplay. 80k miles is a lot for a turbo, mine went out at 130-140k.

just get a slim intercooler, and hang that under the crash bar (bumper) - there is plenty of airflow that gets to the radiator via the top part of the grill, above the bumper.
theres no way im unhooking my ac. its 110 here sometimes. the ebay manifolds look only like $25 cheaper so i will hold out for the custom one that works around the ac.
this is great. my dad walked in while i was looking at turbos and he said that he will stop paying for gas if i put a turbocharger in my car because "there is a 70% you will break the car". then i preceeded to give him a long talk about the pros and cons and all possible failures caused by turbos and how i would fix them and what i am doing to make sure that the turbo will be reliably tuned but he responded by saying he doesnt need to hear that made up mumbo jumbo. i am 98% convinced that he wont listen to me so i might have to wait until college when he wont notive if my car is out of commision for a week. there is no way in hell i can afford gas.
i guess on the bright side maybe i can get tein basics and bodykits so i can have a cool slow car.
So get a job and pay for your own gas :)
Boosting isnt cheap, so if its your dailey, might want to think twice or get a cheak motorcycle to drive on the Galants off days.

i would have by now already bought a second vehicle, probably an early supra but i cant afford insurance on it. my only option as of right now for more power / speed is buying a new 4 door car as my new daily driver but i wont be able to do major mods to that either.
Ah man, buy a beater! By beater I mean a late 80s Ford Escort that costs you $500 lol! Put Liability on it or just keep it parked untill you need it. With a boosted 4g64 and a good tune with everything installed correctly, the first thing that should break would be the headgasket which is an easy fix.
Well other things could break but just Kevin(4-grim), or Peano about the reliablity. It should be very reliable but something will always break, wether its a year or 5 years from now :P
